American History Course Focus

We will...

  • Create a timeline to explain and analyze time periods in American history.
  • Compare and contrast conflicts, events, political ideas, social, and economic issues in American history.
  • Be able to analyze and critique events from various points of view involved.
  • Work to relate our studies to the real-world and how the effect us all.
  • Debate various historical issues from a specific point of view.
  • Interpret facts and ideas from both primary and secondary resources.
  • Evaluate how American history may have been different if different courses of action had taken place in various events.
  • Conduct research on a variety of topics and analyze the validity of the sources we use (opinion, propaganda, etc.).
  • Interpret political cartoons during various time periods and pertaining to a variety of issues and topics.
  • Analyze data from maps, tables, charts, and graphs and seek to identify trends and reasons behind the trend(s).
  • Analyze and summarize historical speeches.
  • Create presentations using technology to enhance the presentation.
  • Analyze causes of industrialization and its impact on business and workers in the US.
  • Learn about big business in the late 1800s.
  • Explore migration to the United States as well as movement westward will be discussed, analyzed, and evaluated.
  • Analyze the urbanization increase and rural decrease.
  • Evaluate Indian land policies, Dawes Act, Chinese Exclusion Act.
  • Discuss and debate social changes and the impact of media.
  • Explore the progressive movement's goals and results (16-19th Amendments).
  • Look at the labor unions, share-croppers, farm labor, etc.
  • Evaluate the causes and consequences of World War I and US involvement (Treaty of Versailles, Wilson's Fourteen Points, League of Nations).
  • Analyze women's suffrage, prohibition, the roaring 20's.
  • Identify the various causes of the Great Depression like the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and analyze its tremendous impact on our country.
  • Debate the positive or negative impact that the New Deal legislation had on our country with the expanding role of government.
  • Describe the causes of World War II and the events that led to the US involvement.
  • Explore the Cold War, Red Scare, United Nations and American life in the 50s.
  • Evaluate the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and the Space Race.
  • Analyze the Civil Rights movement, major issues, and key figures in the fight for equal rights.
  • Debate the impact of Watergate and issues that were important in the 70s.
  • Evaluate the Reagan era and the end of the Cold War.
  • Discover the 90s technological explosion, Bill Clinton era, NAFTA, Election of 2000, September 11th of 2001, terrorism, the conflicts in the Middle East, energy issues, and the future.
