“It’s All in the Attitude”

The Green Meadow Running Club is open to all children in grades 2-5. Kindergarten and 1st graders may participate only if approved by the Physical Education staff. We have running club in both the Fall and the Spring.  During this time, the children train for races that are 3.1 miles (5K) in length.  Although 3 miles may seem like a lot, research shows that with the right kind of training, it is safe as well as beneficial.  During the 2008-2009 school year, Green Meadow had 140+ students in grades 2-5 actively participate and it shows how running has become a part of the Green Meadow culture!

Mounting research is also showing how running can make you smarter.  Studies involving brain research are finding that after running, areas of the brain responsible for learning, organization and memory retention (hippocamous and basal ganglia) produce added brain cells, purely from running!  Studies are showing that those involved in a running program can think clearer and quicker.  It’s easier to recall and organize information as well as remain focused on any particular task.  For more information, log on to www.actionbasedlearning.com and click on Articles.

During the running season, children will train on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 8:00-9:00.  We meet in the gym and proceed to our lower field for running to begin.  There isn’t any type of fee for running club however, you must provide the transportation to school on running club days.

We encourage all students to pack a “running bag” that includes dry socks, dry clothes for the day, dry sneakers or shoes, a hand towel, deodorant, a water bottle and a snack.  Info. will be sent home with the kids regarding snack suggestions  relative to running.  It’s important that kids consume the right kinds of food to replenish what they burn during training.

All runners have the option to purchase a running club t-shirt that they may wear in the races in which they participate. The shirts are $10.00 and are representative of our school and our running club.  Kids wear them with pride!
