Smartboard Technology in Grade 5

We have a great new tool that we have been learning with in grade 5.  We are using the Smartboard from the computer lab as a learning tool in our classroom. This board was won by Mrs. Rothberg.  It is amazing!   It allows for presentations, games, notes and internet access to be available on an interactive board.  This certainly makes the overhead look like an antique!  It has been very interesting and we've only just started to access the countless learning opportunities that we have at our fingertips!  Ask your child to tell you about it!

Math in Grade 5

We are now working on fractions.  At this time children are able to change a fraction into a percent and a decimal.  It is now more important than ever for your child to have mastery of the math facts, pay close attention in class, and to do their homework.  The skills are becoming increasingly more difficult as the year goes on!  Have your child show you how to change a fraction to a decimal and a percent.

Reading News

We have already completed three reading units in our Treasures program.  The next at home project will be poetry.  I have given the children a poetry book to read and would like them to find poetry books of their own to read.  I will send an email attachment with the assignment and due dates.  I will also send home a hard copy.

Science News

We are working on discovering many new things in science. The children have observed, taken apart, separated, and studied "mock" rocks in class. They now realize that rocks are made of many ingredients, while minerals are made of only one.  We will continue studying the properties that geologists use to identify rocks.  The kids will have the chance to perform many investigations on rocks and minerals and by the end of the unit they should be able to identify several minerals!
