First Grade Spelling & Vocabulary Words Lesson 1 Spelling-am, at, cat, can, ran, man, map, tap, a, the Vocabulary bothered- If you are bothered, you are upset or unhappy. supportive- If you are supportive of someone, you help them believe they can do something. Lesson 2 Spelling-hat, had, sad, sat, bat, bag, at, can, help, now Vocabulary nearby- If something is nearby, it is close to you. cram- When you cram many things into something, you fill it with too much. Lesson 3 Spelling- in, pin, pig, big, dig, did, had, sat, no, too Vocabulary memorize- If you memorize a poem, you learn it so you can say it with out looking at the words. proud- If you are proud, you feel very good about something you did or who you are. Lesson 4 Spelling- pick, pack, tack, back, sack, sick, big, in, hold, so Vocabulary pouted- If you pouted, you showed you were not happy by making a face. considerate- A considerate person thinks about the feelings of others. Lesson 5 Spelling- top, hop, hot, not, dot, lot, back, pick, oh, yes Vocabulary horrible- Something horrible is really bad and awful. sweltering- If the temperature is sweltering, it is very hot and uncomfortable. Lesson 6 Spelling- all, call, fall, wall, ball, tall, not, top, much, thank Vocabulary commotion- A commotion happens when a lot of people are running around making a lot of noise. overflowing- If something is overflowing, it is pouring out of its usual space. Lesson 7 Spelling-set, sent, ten, tell, let, get, all, call, make, of Vocabulary odor- If something has an odor, you can tell what it is by the way it smells. consume- If you consume something, you completely use it up. Lesson 8 Spelling- then, them, this, that, path, with, ten, get, said, was Vocabulary chatty- If you are chatty, you really like to talk. duty- A duty is a job you have to do. Lesson 9 Spelling- us, bus, must, cut, cub, club, with, then, don’t, says Vocabulary groaned- If you groaned, you made a deep sound that shows unhappiness. nutritious- If something is nutritious, it is healthy to eat. Lesson 10 Spelling- long, song, sing, ring, bring, thing, us, must, does, food Vocabulary awkward- If you are awkward, you move in a clumsy, rough way. superb- If something is superb, it is the best it can be, or excellent. Lesson 11 Spelling- or, for, form, more, store, sort, long, bring, your, head Vocabulary nuzzled: If an animal nuzzled you, it rubbed against you with its nose or face. pranced: If you pranced around, you would be walking in a bouncy, springy way. Lesson 12 Spelling- shop, shot, shut, rush, wish, fish, for, more, from, very Vocabulary greedy- A greedy person wants a lot of something and does not want to share any of it. consequences- Consequences are things that happen as a result of another action. regret- A person who has a regret feels sorry for something he or she did. Lesson 13 Spelling- chip, chin, inch, such, catch, match, wish, shop, saw, were Vocabulary astonishing- If something is astonishing, it amazes and surprises you. continue- If you continue to do something, you keep doing it. doubt- If you doubt something, you do not believe it is true. Lesson 14 Spelling- far, farm, arm, art, part, park, chin, such, fly, watch Vocabulary approached- If you approached something, you moved toward it. energetic- If you are energetic, you are filled with energy. excel- If you excel, you are very good at something. Lesson 15 Spelling- quit, quick, quiz, whiz, which, when, arm, part, house, put Vocabulary cozily- If you lie cozily in bed, you are warm, snug, and relaxed. interrupted- If you interrupted something, you stopped something in the middle. admire- If you admire someone, you like them very much or look up to them. Lesson 16 Spelling- her, fur, turn, bird, girl, first, quit, when, name, work Vocabulary captured- If you have captured something, you have caught it and are not letting it go. struggling- If you are struggling, you are making a great effort with your body or mind to do something. relax- When you relax, you are not uneasy or upset about anything; you spend time resting or doing things for fun. Lesson 17 Spelling- hand, handle, wig, wiggle, single, little, girl, by, room, soon Vocabulary rejoice- If you rejoice, you show that you are very happy. unnoticed- If you go unnoticed, no one sees you. agreement- When you are in agreement with others, you all think the same thing. Lesson 18 Spelling- low, slow, grow, road, soap, boat, little, handle, carry, would Vocabulary bulged- If a container bulged, its sides stuck out as if it were going to burst. argue- When you argue with someone, you disagree loudly. command- When you command someone, you tell him or her what to do. Lesson 19 Spelling- me, see, feet, seat, mean, team, slow, road, our, over Vocabulary courteous- If you are courteous, you are very polite. rapidly- If you move rapidly, you move very fast. devious-If you are being devious, you are not being truthful. Lesson 20 Spelling- day, say, play, plain, rain, wait, feet, me, door, told Vocabulary grumbling If you are grumbling, you are complaining or letting others know you are unhappy about something. realized If you realized something, you suddenly understood or knew it. bitterly A place that is bitterly cold is very, very cold. Lesson 21 Spelling- came, game, gate, late, lake, take, day, play, four, place Vocabulary sensitive If you are sensitive, you care about other people's feelings. devoted If you are devoted to someone, you love and want to take care of that person. mysterious If something is mysterious, it is strange or puzzling. Lesson 22 Spelling- like, line, nine, mine, mile, while, take, came, gone, near Vocabulary incident An incident is something unusual that happens and often is an accident. gradual If something happens in a gradual way, it happens slowly. indecisive When you are indecisive, you cannot make up your mind about something. Lesson 23 Spelling- home, hope, rope, rode, rose, those, like, nine, right, walk Vocabulary asserted If you asserted something, you said in a strong way what you believe. offended If you feel offended, you feel hurt or upset by something someone did or said. cheerful When you are happy and smiling, people say you are cheerful. Lesson 24 Spelling- ice, nice, race, page, edge, large, home, those, love, hello Vocabulary pleased When you are pleased with something, you are happy with it. stammered If I stammered, I had a hard time speaking. I kept stopping and repeating the same sounds without even knowing it. puzzling When something is puzzling, it is hard to understand. Lesson 25 Spelling- use, cute, cube, tube, tune, rule, nice, large, hear, talk Vocabulary deserve If you deserve something, you have worked hard to get it. variety If there is a variety of something, there are many different kinds. typical If something is typical, it usually happens this way. Lesson 26 Spelling- my, try, tried, ties, light, might, use, rule, color, hair Vocabulary fondly When something is done fondly, it is done in a caring, loving, or tender way. similar If two things are similar, they are alike in some ways. affectionate If you are affectionate, you like to show you love someone by hugging or cuddling. Lesson 27 Spelling- how, cow, down, out, found, round, try, light, earth, table Vocabulary quivered If something quivered, it shook, shivered, or trembled quickly. wailed If you wailed, you let out a long loud cry because you were upset about something or in pain. scattered If things or people scattered, they went off in different directions. Lesson 28 Spelling- funny, happy, story, stories, hurry, hurried, how, out, baby, done Vocabulary familiar If something is familiar, it is something you know very well. numerous If you have numerous toys, you have many toys. vibrant If you shirt is vibrant, it has bright or bold colors. Lesson 29 Spelling- boot, tooth, soon, noon, new, grew, story, hurry, great, took Vocabulary interested When you are interested in something, you want to do it or learn more about it. construct When I construct something, I build it or make it. assist When I assist someone, I help them do something. Lesson 30 Spelling- find, mind, mild, cold, fold, most, soon, new, boy, building Vocabulary seized If you seized something, you grabbed it in a sudden strong way. exhausted If you are exhausted, you are so tired you can hardly move. patient If you are patient, you put up with things without complaining. Lesson 31 Spelling- broil, soil, coin, boy, ahoy, toy, mild, find, about, once Lesson 32 Spelling-wealth, tread, ahead, bread, spread, health, broil, boy, upon, time Lesson 33 Spelling-cause, fault, pause, saw, straw, draw, bread, ahead, happily, after
