4th Nine Weeks Standards Fourth Nine Weeks Standards

Dear Parents and Guardians,

          It’s finally time to look at the grade level expectations for the final nine week grading period!  Below is a list of standards your child will be expected to know by the end of this fourth nine weeks.  I will also be retesting students on any standards not yet mastered.  Please keep this letter somewhere safe so you can locate it and work on any areas of concern. 

 

Math

Your child should be able to:

·        Compare numbers to 100 (more than/less than/equal to)

·        Use a number line to 100

·        Write numbers to 100

·        Represent place value  (ones and tens)

·        Use manipulatives, drawings, or symbols to show 100+

·        Add and subtract double digit numbers without borrowing or regrouping

·        Solve an addition number sentence with a missing addend

·        Compare fractions with materials and in real-life situations( 1/2, 1/3, 1/4)

·        Measure/compare by length and weight (nonstandard and standard)

·        Know standard tools for length, weight, capacity, and temperature

·        Know that addition and subtraction work as a fact family (2+3=5, 5-3=2)

 

 

Reading

Your child should know how to:

·        Identify the story elements (main idea, plot, setting, characters,  problem and solution )

·        Make connections in a story to self, world or another text

·        Compare and contrast stories (alike/different)

·        Distinguish fact (non-fiction) from  fiction and cause and effect

·        Decode base words with inflectional endings (-s,-es, -ies, -ing)

·        Adjust reading rate based on purpose, text difficulty, form and style

·        Determine the correct meaning of a word in context (homophones)

·        Begin using a dictionary or glossary to find unfamiliar words

·        Locate and organize information in charts and graphs in an informational text

 

 

 

Writing

Your child should be able to:

·        Write numbers, uppercase, and lowercase letters using left to right sequence, appropriate spacing, correct alignment, and formation

·        Write 5 complete sentences on a given topic or story

·        Write in a variety of informational forms ( recipes/advertisements)

·        Use capital letters to begin sentences and proper nouns

·        Use correct ending punctuation including exclamation points

·        Use and correctly spell word wall words and high frequency words consistently

·        Use proper spacing and letter formation

·        Revise sentences for repetitive text, adding details using a caret, and replacing general words with specific words

·        Edit for commas in dates and items in a series

·        Edit for plural and singular nouns

**Students will discover a variety of ways to send messages by story writing, writing postcards, letters, invitations, and advertisements, as we discuss what makes our writing worth reading.  We will also focus on the intended audience for our writing.

 

Theme (Social Studies, Science, Health)

Your child should be able to:

·        Make observations of living things and their environment and that they closely resemble their parents

·        Identify the major parts of a plant(stem, roots, leaves, and flowers)

·        Through observation recognize that plants and animals have basic needs

·        Differentiate between living and non-living things

·        Know how to distinguish between threatening and non-threatening environments and how to prevent injuries

·        Understand methods of communication from long ago to the present day
