First Nine Weeks Standards First Nine Weeks Standards

Dear Families,

          As each nine week grading period begins, you will receive a letter that states the skills we will learning.  I am hoping that this is helpful as we both look forward to seeing your child meet all grade level expectations.

 

Math

   v     Recognize patterns (AB, ABB, ABC)

v     Create/Extend and fill in missing patterns

v     Describe 2-D shapes (square, triangle, rectangle, circle)

v     Count by 2’s to 26

v     County by 5’s to 50

v     County by 10’s to 50

v     Count backwards from 20

v     Read and write numbers to 25

v     Compare numbers to 25 (more than, less than)

v     Understand addition (putting together, increasing, some, some more)

v     Understand subtraction (taking away, some, some went away)

v     Count on (i.e. If given the number 3, count on 2 more)

v     Add facts to 5

v     Subtract facts to 5

v     Know doubles to 5

v     Know ordinal numbers to 5 (1st, 2nd…)

 

Reading

v     Locate the title, names of the author, and illustrator

v     Recognize all letters of the alphabet

v     Know all letters and sounds

v     Identify sounds in words

v     Blend 3 sounds to form a word

v     Use illustrations in the text to make predictions

v     Use and relate vocabulary that is introduced

v     Use phonetic analysis (hear and segment sounds in words)

v     Use beginning letters and word families as cues for decoding

v     Know 80% - 100% of the pre-primer words

 

 

 Writing

  Print lower and upper case letters and numbers

v     Use left to right sequence when writing

v     Use correct spacing between letters, words, and sentences

v     Draw a picture and explain why it is important

v     Participate in writing simple stories, poems, rhymes or song lyrics

v     Pre-write by drawing and group discussions

v     Know the difference between letters, words, and sentences (capital letters and punctuation will be discussed and practiced daily)

 

Listening and Speaking

 

v     Follow two-step oral directions

v     Listen attentively to fiction and non-fiction read alouds

v     Follow rules of conversation (taking turns speaking and listening)

v     Follow conversation strategies (raising hand to speak, staying on topic, facing the speaker)

v     Begin to use and understand basic skills of using eye contact and appropriate volume

 

Science/Social Studies (Moving & Grooving)

 

v     Understand that things move at different speeds and various ways

v     Know there is a relationship between force, gravity, and motion

v     Know that one way to change how something is moving is to push or pull it

v     Know that in order to learn, it is important to observe the same things often and compare them

v     Use the senses, tools, and instruments to obtain information from his/her surroundings

v     Know the days of the week and months of the year

v     Know the responsibility of authority figures at home, school and in the community

v     Study a variety of art forms
