Reading Workshop

Click to viewIn our class we focus our reading instruction around a workshop approach. I have attended training for the past three summers on the Reading Workshop, I also have attended workshops in New York. During Reading Workshop, the students are responsible for reading books at their own independent reading level during this time. We focus on various reading strategies during this time.  The students are also responsible for practicing these strategies and recording their thinking on post it notes and reading notebooks. This is very individualized reading instruction for all the students.

What is Reading Workshop?

http://www.busyteacherscafe.com/teacher_resources/literacy_pages/reading_workshop.htm

Our reading units are broken down into 4-6 week units around reading genres and reading strategies.  You will see this page updated every 4-6 weeks depending on the unit of study.

Reading Workshop Schedule:

10-15 minute - Mini Lesson (teacher reads a short story, picture book, chapter to model what is expected of the student for that day)

30 minutes - independent reading (students are reading, writing in thier journals or post it, and the teacher meets with students on an individual or small group level)

10 minute - Wrap up - partner share/group share (during this time the student meets with their assigned partner or group and discusses what he/she learned or read about) The student takes responsibility for sharing their learning.
