Writing: During the month the students are working on adding detail to our writing. We are working on making a color word chart, a size chart, and a texture chart to use during our writing. The students are also expected to be using sight words that they already know in their sentences. At home you can have your child draw a picture and then encourage to write two sentences about the pictures. Example: (We went swimming at the pool. It was a hot day.)
Math: We just finished our unit on Addition. We were talking about joining groups using an addition and equal signs. We discussed that altogheter and join means that our numbers are going to get bigger.
Our next unit is on Beginning Subtractions. The students will talk about taking away and how numbers get smaller. They will be starting with a number and have to take some away to get the answer. This is an important foundation for number sense.
We will be working on both of those concepts as well as review other math material in our math journals.
Reading: We are really getting into our reading in our just right books. Students are learning to reading by using words they already know, looking at the picture to match the text, and reading using the beginning sound of words.
During reading we are focusing on Jan Brett books, winter books, and we will be starting a mini non fiction unit on Arctic Animals. During this time students are expected to retell using beginning, middle, and end. They are also asked to think beyond the text. Why is the character feeling that way? How do we know that the problem got solved? Does this book remind you of anything?
Science/Social Studies: We are working on Hibernation and what animals do in the winter. Why do some animals sleep all winter? Why do other animals do in the winter - how do they get their food?
Martin Luther King - talk about his significance in our school life and how he has shown us that we all have dreams. We will be making a class book about our dreams when we get older.
Word Work: During our word work we are working on putting sight words together, building sentences, sorting ending sounds, and matching words that have a CVC pattern. (mop, hat, bus, mat) These are words that the children should be able to start sounding out and writing on their own.
