It was a typical recess for the fourth grade students at Resurrection Catholic School in Lancaster, PA. Ben, David, Spencer and Brandon were playing Capture the Flag. Jay, Ryan, Noah and Hunter were enthusiastically involved in a game of Bounce Ball. The excitement of Wall Ball kept Felix, Fred, Alvin, and Rigo busy. And, of course, the girls, Rachael, Lillian, Helena, Carrigan, Mari, and Josie were happily playing Basketball Keep Away and sharing the gossip of the day. Mrs. Buller was on recess duty.
Then Helena had a bright idea. “Let’s throw our extra packed lunch food into the air and see who can catch the most with our mouths!” she said. The girls thought this was a great idea. Up and down went the food. Grapes, pretzels, fruit snacks, carrots, and other little items were going up into the air and skillfully coming down into the mouths of the girls. Helena thought a bigger challenge was needed. She said, “I will throw a grape the highest height yet and still catch it.” “Watch this!” Up very high went the grape. However, it didn’t come down!
All of a sudden, up in the sky there were flashes of light and buzzing sounds. The grape hit a force field! Very quickly, all kinds of food came pouring out of the sky. There were donuts, buttered noodles, Snickers bars, giant slices of pizza, carrots, smoothies, mashed potatoes, Jell-O, soda, fried rice, chicken nuggets and so many other types of food that it would take days to list them all.
The fourth grade went crazy with excitement. David and Ben began sword fighting with carrots. Carrigan, Rachael, Jay, and Brandon were swimming in a pool of smoothies. Spencer, Ryan, Felix and Rigo were jumping in huge piles of Jell-O. A food fight began with Noah, Hunter, Fred, and Alvin challenging Lillian, Helena, Mari, and Josie. Mrs. Buller was ringing the bell frantically to get the students’ attention until she saw the giant Snickers bars and Dr Pepper and joined in the excitement.
The fourth grade was having so much fun that they didn’t notice the crowd that had gathered outside the fence of the recess yard. The military had been called in as well! Many suggestions were being offered on how to turn off the force field. The eighth grade thought they should start stacking the faculty and students on top of one another until they were high enough to turn off the force field. The seventh grade offered to throw food high into the sky at the force field. Sixth grade insisted that squirting a huge water gun into the air would end the problem. The fifth grade suggested that a giant bottle of hot sauce was all that was needed to stop the rain of food.
But it was the principal, Miss Weaver, and the military who had the final say. They agreed the solution was to shoot a rocket into the air. Miss Weaver shot the rocket perfectly and hit the force field while the military kept everyone safe. The food stopped raining down. The crowd slowly walked away leaving Mrs. Buller and her fourth grade standing around smiling at what had just happened. The students agreed that they were the luckiest class in the whole school. As they made their way back into the school, they began singing Spongebob’s “Best Day Ever” while hoping that another adventure will soon come their way again.
