Curriculum Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We would like to welcome you and your child to our Physical Education/Health program at Hanley Academy for the 2009-2010 school year! This newsletter is to inform you about the PE/Health program your child will be participating in this year.

STUDENT INFORMATION CARDS

At times during the school year, we may need to contact a parent/guardian regarding behavior or injuries related to PE/Health class. It is important for us to have contact information readily available for these instances. Please provide as much information as possible in assisting us to contact you. Also, so that we can provide a positive physical education experience for your child, please list any health concerns your child may have on the “Student Information Card.” Please click on the link provided to complete this form or return this card immediately to your child’s proper PE/Health teacher.

HANLEY ACADEMY PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

We believe that a quality Physical Education program is fundamental for our students. Why do children need a quality PE program? The simple answer is so that they will remain physically active throughout their lifetime and reap the benefits of doing so. Quality PE provides students with a multitude of important learning experiences that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Physical Education is that phase of education which is concerned with the teaching of skills, improving physical fitness, the reinforcement of other subjects, self-discipline, leadership and cooperation, enhancing self-efficacy, stress reduction, and strengthening peer relationships. Physical activity contributes much to the growth, development, and the general well-being of every individual. Some of the benefits of our quality PE program are:

*       An opportunity to teach character traits such as sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation, encouragement, kindness, responsibility, self-esteem, respect for others, and so much more!

*       It gives students an additional area in which to excel. Students who struggle in the classroom may find increased self-respect and a new sense of admiration from their classmates in PE.

*       A quality PE program keeps our students healthy through participation through the program, while teaching them the basic skills needed for future fitness, athletic, and health success. A student who is physically and mentally healthy is more likely to be prepared to meet the daily challenges of living in our society, and is more likely to make appropriate choices about lifestyles.

*       Quality PE promotes long-term health and wellness by making health and fitness fun, and by incorporating lessons on the importance of movement for overall health and disease prevention.

*       PE reduces obesity and other health risks.

*       Research shows that a quality PE program will increase standardized test scores.

*       PE can be used to improve and reinforce learning across the curriculum.

*       Quality PE involves every student, and meets every student at his or her level of ability.

*       The goal of our program is to provide activities where self-expression, self-confidence, and physical and mental poise can be attained through perseverance and mastery of physical, mental, and social tasks.

*       Quality PE provides sufficient personal skills to perform a variety of physical activities, give the student a high regard for participating in regular physical activity, and gives them knowledge of the benefits, risks, precautions of involvement in physical activity, and a value for the role of a healthy lifestyle.

Hanley Academy PE and Health Education is more than running, calisthenics, or sport. It is a total movement experience that focuses on fun, involvement, character, self-esteem, health and fitness, and total well-being for our students. It is an essential part of every day to live long, healthy lives.

IMPORTANCE OF PROPER FOOTWEAR

It is very important that your child has the proper footwear in order to participate safely in our class activities. Please make sure your child has athletic shoes that are closed heel and toe with non-marking soles and that they are comfortable and securely tied. Students who come to PE class without the proper footwear will be asked to sit out and not participate for the day. Open heel or toe shoes, flip-flops, sandals, dress shoes, and even boots to not have the proper foot and ankle support needed for certain activities in PE.

K-8 HEALTH CURRICULUM

As part of our health curriculum, we will be teaching lessons that have been approved and provided by the Michigan Model for Health. It is our intent to teach students health topics that are age and grade appropriate. Some of the areas of health that will be covered in Grades K-8 are Social and Emotional Health; Nutrition and Physical Activity; Safety; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs; Personal Health and Wellness, HIV Prevention and Growth & Development (Grades 4-6), and HIV and STI Prevention along with Sexuality Education (Grades 7-8). For more detailed information regarding our Health Program, click on the K-8 Health Information page on the left of your screen.

K-8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

The goal of our program is to provide grade level or age appropriate activities where self-expression, self-confidence, and physical and mental poise can be attained through determination and mastery of physical, mental, and social tasks. For Grades K-8, our PE program will use three different approaches to physical education.

The first approach is Fitness Education. In fitness education, students will be fitness tested twice; once at the beginning of the school year and once at the end to hopefully measure improvements. The areas of fitness that will be covered are body composition, speed & agility, muscular strength & endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility.

A second approach is the Skill Theme approach. This approach is based on developmentally appropriate principles that recognize that children have different interests, abilities, and motor skills. The intent is to help children learn a variety of locomotor, nonmanipulative, and manipulative skills that they can use to enjoyably and confidently play a sport in the future. Skill Themes are generic and are not tied to any particular sport or activity.

The third approach is Adventure Education. Adventure involves cooperative, teamwork, and trust activities that have students work together to reach a common goal. Adventure is a way of doing; it is not just an activity in and of itself. There will be elements of surprise and the activities in class will compel students to do things they might not ever imagined possible. They will be challenged and be invited to take risks. In order for this is happen and for it to be a good experience for them, there will be an atmosphere of safety, where they can speak their minds and not be judged and push themselves to the limits, while at the same time have fun and make new friends.

The following are the main criteria that helped us build our program:

*       Sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, and respect for self and others are taught prior to competition.

o        In Grades K-2, the emphasis is on individual motor skill development and physical fitness.

o        In Grades 3-8, teamwork is encouraged while refining motor skills and physical fitness. In Grades 5-8, lesson plans may introduce more small group and team competition, while further developing speed and accuracy of movement and encouraging total health and fitness.

K-8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNITS

Below is a list of the units that our PE program will cover the entire school year. It is important to note that due to changes in schedules, inclement weather, etc. that not all units may get covered. Our PE department will do its best to cover the age appropriate skills necessary for each student to move to their next ability level.

ASSESSMENTS / GRADING

Students are expected to fully participate, especially in PE. Participation includes effort, attitude, behavior, cooperation, teamwork, understanding of critical points, and appropriate footwear. Grades 5-8 may have written and/or skill tests and classroom assignments.

A TYPICAL DAY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

*       2-4 Minutes: Get into squads, take attendance, and explain activity for the day.

*       3-5 Minutes: Aerobic warm-ups (Walking and Jogging)

*       5-10 Minutes: Stretching exercises for major muscle groups (Calisthenics)

*       15-30 Minutes: General Activity

*       2-4 Minutes: Cool-down

INJURIES/HEALTH CONCERNS

Students with pre-existing injuries are asked to bring in a doctor or parent/guardian note describing restricted activities. Students with restricted activities by a doctor must have a “return date” for physical activity. Students with a cast or splint are required to have a doctor’s note or parent/guardian permission before they will be allowed to return to participate.

OUR PHYSICAL EDUCATION RULES FOR SUCCESS

There are classroom/gymnasium expectations, rules, and procedures the students are expected to follow. These are listed below:

RESPECT

R = Responsibility; E = Effort; S = Safety; P = Participation; E = Enthusiasm; C = Challenge; T = Teamwork

*       RESPECT means; be nice to yourself, the teacher, your classmates, and the equipment.

*       The “R” stands for Responsibility, which means enter the gym quietly and begin each class by sitting in your squad and having your proper footwear. Do not bring food, candy, gum, or drinks into the gym.

*       The “E” stands for Effort, which means try everything and try your best.

*       The “S” is for Safety, which means act safely in the gym at all times. Work in your own personal space and move under control. Do not hurt yourself and others, and keep your hands to yourself!

*       The “P” stands for Participation, which means you will participate in every class. You must be prepared with the proper footwear and comfortable clothing.

*       The other “E” is for Enthusiasm, which means show good sportsmanship, positive attitudes, and always encourage one another. Do not say mean things. Absolutely no put-downs!

*       The “C” is for Challenge, which means be an independent learner. Do what you’re supposed to do without being told. Try even though you may not think you can do something.

*       The “T” stands for Teamwork, which means be a good friend and help others. Also, cooperate with the teacher, classmates, and others. When others talk, we listen.

CONSEQUENCES

Students who do not follow the rules will receive the following consequences:

*       NO GYM SHOES: If a student does not have the proper athletic shoes to participate in PE, the student must sit out in the designated “NO GYM SHOE AREA” and complete a writing assignment. After a student's third offense, a reminder letter will be sent home to notify parents/guardians of the situation and to let them know that if the student continues to not have the proper footwear, it will affect their physical education grade.

*       1st Consequence: Verbal warning to student and discussion about their behavior. Students who forget to wear their athletic shoes will have to sit out of class, with a warning. There will be a designated “No Gym Shoe” area for students to sit. Students without proper footwear in Grades 3-5 will have a writing assignment to complete in order to make up points lost.

*       2nd Consequence: Time out for bad behavior. The “Penalty Box” will be a designated area for time out. Student(s) will sit in the “Penalty Box” for 5-10 minutes, as determined by the teacher. Students who forget to wear their athletic shoes will have to sit out of class again, with a 2nd warning.

o        Grades K-2: The student(s) will sit in the penalty box to think about what they did and try to calm down and get in control. A note may be sent home or parents/guardians may be contacted about behavior.

o        Grades 3-5: The student(s) will sit in the penalty box, think about what they did, then they will complete a writing assignment. The assignment will be sent home to have a parent/guardian sign and return.

*       3rd Consequence: Time out for bad behavior. “Penalty Box” for 10-15 minutes of the class period, as determined by the teacher. Students who forget to wear their athletic shoes will have to sit out of class again, with a 3rd warning. After the 3rd offense, a letter will be sent home to have parents/guardians help remind students to have the proper footwear in PE.

o        Grades K-2: The student(s) again, will sit in the penalty box to think about what they did and try to calm down and get in control. A note may be sent home or parents/guardians may be contacted about behavior.

o        Grades 3-5: The student(s) will sit in the penalty box, think about what they did, then again, complete a writing assignment. The assignment will be sent home to be signed and returned by the parent/guardian. A Behavior Report will also be sent home to parents/guardians to be signed and returned as well.

*       4th Consequence: Time out for bad behavior. “Penalty Box” for the remainder of the class period.

o        Grades K-2: The student(s) again, will sit in the penalty box to think about what they did and try to calm down and get in control. A note will be sent home or parents/guardians may be contacted about behavior.

o        Grades 3-5: Student will have to complete a Behavior Plan where they will list in a complete sentence, what their inappropriate behavior was. They will also have to write a plan for the future and state what they are going to do to avoid being placed in the “Penalty Box” in the future. The Behavior Plan will be sent home to be signed and returned by the parent/guardian. A Behavior Report will be sent home to parents/guardians as well. Parent/guardian may be contacted to discuss behavior.

*       Severe Disruptions: Student will be sent to the appropriate vice-principal's office immediately for further discipline.
