Junior Year to Senior Year

Summer Checklist

  • Look into having senior pictures taken and developed.  It is a good idea to have them ready for scholarships and applications.
  • Review course selections for the fall.
  • If you are considering participating in athletics in college, register for the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net (click on Prospective Athlete, then Domestic Student Release Form.  Complete form and pay fee by credit card).
  • Update your resume.  This information will be used on college applications and many scholarship applications.  Any format is acceptable, but it might be good to follow the format at www.applytexas.com if it will be used for Texas public college applications.
  • Prepare for September/October SAT and ACT—utilize workbooks, computer programs, SAT and ACT sample problem booklets.  If you want to attend a test prep class, check out the list of test prep programs on the NYOS Student Advisor website (look under Resources).
  • Set up your fall testing schedule for SAT Reasoning Test & ACT.  Check colleges to see if SAT Subject Tests are required, either for admission or placement.  Many schools do not require SAT Subject tests, but some do, so check this carefully.  (For example, UT requires for placement only, not admission.  Other state schools, including A&M, do not require SAT Subject Tests.  Selective private schools are more likely to require these tests.)
  • Memorize Social Security# and the NYOS CEEB/High School Code # 440347.
  • Consider enrolling in dual credit courses at ACC in the fall.  Complete info is available on the NYOS Student Advisor website or at www.austincc.edu.
  • Set up 2 or 3 college visits this summer.  See the college websites for their schedule of tours and information sessions.
  • Make a preliminary list of 8 potential colleges.
  • Look at the NYOS school calendar and plan fall/spring college visits on student holidays.
  • Complete rough drafts of essays.  You can check current college applications for essay topics, although some of these may change when the new forms come out.  Applications are available at www.applytexas.org, www.commonapp.org, or at individual college websites.  The applications for the upcoming year are usually online by late August.
  • Discuss the financial aspects of senior expenses and college expenses with your family.
  • Look through scholarship source books, surf the web, and register for a FREE scholarship search on the web (www.fastweb.com, for example).
  • Set up a checking account and learn to do laundry.  It’s not too early to practice these, and many other, life skills!
