Absent Students

When sending work home to a sick student via a family member or friend, I use a canvas bag that has my name on it. I pack it with the child’s assignments and books. When he/she recovers and returns to school with her makeup work in the tote, there’s a twinkle in his/her eye because she got to use the teacher’s personal bag! :-)

Birthdays & Half Year Birthdays

Students are allowed to celebrate their birthday, or half birthday, by bringing in a snack for the entire class. The honoree is allowed to pass out his/her treats to his/her classmates during Snack Time.

Drinks

Students are allowed to bring in a water container that holds only water (no juices, sodas, etc). Please be sure to send in a 'sock' to keep the condensation from pooling on the school desks and spoiling someone's hard  work.

End-Of-Day Routine

Daily:

  • Students write in their planners the subjects and activities covered/done in class. They also record what they did not get done so they can do it at home.
  • Students also write in their HCS planners the homework that is required for any subject.

Homework

As stated in Our Classroom Homework policy, parents and students received at the beginning of the year, homework is given four days a week and is due the following day. Sometimes I let students have all the homework for one week. In this case, the entire Homework Packet will be due on the Friday.

There is a sorter in the room with a spot for each subject assignment. As students come into the class they ‘file’ their homework in the designated places. Before we check the homework as a class, I will hand back the homework. This way I can see immediately who has completed the homework and who has not. If it is homework that I do not correct as a class, I quickly scan the handed in homework and record those who have it done and those who have not.

Those who have not completed their homework will ‘visit’ the Chivalry Board and fill in the Excuse Slip for not having their homework completed. I also keep track on my monthly Accountability Chart.

I start all of my students with a homework grade of 100 at the beginning of each nine weeks. I subtract 5 points from the grade each time they do not have their homework. Homework is weighted between 20% and 50% depending on the subject. Fridays, we play Homeworkopoly (see Homeworkopoly Link).

Lunch

Parents are asked to pack a nutritious lunch for their child. The custodial staff has requested that children do not bring any food or drink that contains red dyes because of staining that can occur when these items are spilled. Presently we eat in our room. Teachers stay with students during lunch.

Morning “Five”

First thing every morning, student will:

1)   Unpack their book bags.

2)  Get out their K.N.I.G.H.T.S’ Book, put papers in designated spots, put K.N.I.G.H.T.S’ Book under desk chair.

3)  Hang book bag with coat, under coat rack.

4)  Mark themselves present and choose lunch.

5)  Begin the Morning Five Journal prompt: Pencil Power, Think Tank, Mad Math Minutes, Memory Verse writing, etc.

Pencil Sharpener

Ideally, they should use the pencil sharpener only during “Morning Five” and/or during “Snack and Study Time”. However, using it anytime we are not engaged in active instructional time is accepted.

Personal Best Days

This falls on Fridays and is a designated time of ‘teacher time’ to do extra work, practice on the computer, tutor or be tutored, or to do some of the reading required for homework. Those students who have unfinished work must do it during this time.

Popcorn Pay Off

Good behavior pops up everywhere in our class. Displayed in my room, is a large, clear container with a lid. In it I store a supply of popcorn kernels. Nearby I have a one-fourth cup measurement. Each time the class receives a compliment, I ask a student volunteer to measure a quarter cup of kernels and pour them into the class container. When it is full, we pop the good-behavior kernels and enjoy a tasty snack of popcorn! -- A job well done!

Castle Cash

A student can earn Castle Cash for such things as:

·        Following Our “Code of Honor”

·        Showing good behavior

·        Doing kind acts

·        Participating in classroom discussions

·        Following directions

·        Being a good listener

·        Being quiet in ‘The King’s Chapel”

·        And so forth

Students will never know when I will award Castle Cash, so they should always be doing their best to please the Lord and themselves -- not just me.

Restroom Procedure

At a designated spot is a small digital clock and a notebook. Each page is divided into three sections: Name, Time Out, Time Returned. The students sign out and write the “Time Out”. When they return, they write the “Return Time”. The first week of using it everyone has to go, every minute. Then it becomes routine. I learn who goes out two or three times in the a.m. and again in the p.m. If it looks like a pattern, I discuss it with them privately. If they are out longer then five minutes, without a good reason, they lose that amount of time from recess. I have found that this works like a charm.

Snack & Study Time

Every day we will have a “Snack & Study Time” (This depends on lunch scheduling: AM Snack for late lunches, PM Snack for early lunches)

Students may bring a healthy snack to eat mid-morning. Good items to send for a snack are fruit and/or vegetables, applesauce, cheese sticks, crackers, or juice.  Please DO NOT send items with lots of sugar in them (no candy, pop, etc.). “Sugary” items may be eaten at the end of the day, during Study Time only, and/or returned home with child at the end of the day.

Students who have late work or unfinished homework/class work must work on it during this time.

Student Display: Proud Papers

Students are in charge of changing our student work display! On the first day of each week, students select an assignment from his/her Friday Folder. They write a short reflection on why they chose the assignment, attach the reflection, then post both on the Proud Paper Bulletin Board. The next Monday, students remove the assignment and replace it with a different one from their Friday Folder.
