With Highlights from the Week

Dear Dads & Moms, Grandmas & Grandpas, friends and relatives,

Here’s what we’ll be been doing this week …

Bible

This week we finish up the Full Armor
of God Scripture passage. For those students who did poorly on any of the other passages, they may make it up this Friday (Eph. 6: 10-11, 14-16; Verses 12 & 13 would be counted as extra credit).

Language Arts:

Unit 2 of our LA curriculum covers comparative writing. So you are aware of how I grade writing, below is a synopsis of my writing assessment system:

Every piece of writing receives one of the following:

v+:    Superior

v:     Adequate

v-:    Needs Improvement

The vs are known as a “Faithful Grade”. It means that the student was ‘faithful’ in completing the assignment. I keep track of the various checkmarks in my gradebook and students keep track in their Writing Folder.

Each v keeps a student’s grade as is. However, for every 3 v+ a student receives, I will add a whole point to his/her final writing grade. By the same standard, for every 3 v- a student receives, I will deduct a whole point to his/her writing grade.

A sample can be seen in your child’s Friday Folder that comes home this Friday.

Math:

Today your child came home with the first of many multiplication speed drills. An 80% and above is adequate. However, those students who scored lower than 80% would benefit greatly if they were to practice the times tables on a regular basis. It is imperative that your child have an adequate working knowledge of his/her time tables in order to progress through the remainder of 4th grade and into 5th grade. Speed drills will be given two times a week.

Reading:

Continuing our new book project … Building a Sandwich with a Historical

Fiction novel. Books must be brought to school each day for DEAR time

and brought home each night for reading time at home.

Science:

We’ve finished working on the Framework of our Support System … Our first quiz will be this Thursday.

Social Studies:

We’re finishing up our extensive unit on The Great Awakening. We will study the spiritual fathers of the Great Awakening and creating “Stars for Jesus” as a research project that will end up as our first Christmas decorations for the room. Whew, Christmas is just around the corner!

Spelling

Unit 2/#3: “Leah’s Pony”. Check out the spelling list on our website.
