Welcome to writing class! This year we will focus on writing journal entries, essays, stories, and poems.
Our main goal this year will be to master the following *skill areas and to use that knowledge to independently produce meaningful essays and stories. *PREWRITING
- brainstorm/plan ideas using the 4 square graphic organizer (Click on the 4 square file below to view an example of brainstorming using the 4 square organizer.)
*TOPIC DEVELOPMENT
- clear focus
- organizing ideas in a way that makes sense for their purpose
- adequate detail
- specific word choice
*REVISING
After writing your first draft you will work to improve (add/change/delete) as needed your:
- organization
- content
- paragraph development
- level of detail
- style
- tone
- word choice
*EDITING
After writing your final draft (also as you revise) you will work to improve (add/change/delete) as needed your:
- end marks
- commas for series
- capitalization
- usage (subject and verb agreement)
- sentence structure (elimination of fragments)
- spelling

4 square step by step

The 4 square is used as a prewriting tool to help students organize their ideas. Once they complete the 4 square, they are ready to use the ideas they have brainstormed to write a 5 paragraph essay or story.
