Welcome to writing class!  This year we will focus on writing journal entries, essays, stories, and poems.

Our main goal this year will be to master the following *skill areas and to use that knowledge to independently produce meaningful essays and stories.

*PREWRITING
  • brainstorm/plan ideas using the 4 square graphic organizer (Click on the 4 square file below to view an example of brainstorming using the 4 square organizer.)

*TOPIC DEVELOPMENT
  • clear focus
  • organizing ideas in a way that makes sense for their purpose
  • adequate detail
  • specific word choice
*REVISING

After writing your first draft you will work to improve (add/change/delete) as needed your:
  • organization
  • content
  • paragraph development
  • level of detail
  • style
  • tone
  • word choice

*EDITING

After writing your final draft  (also as you revise) you will work to improve (add/change/delete) as needed your:
  • end marks
  • commas for series
  • capitalization
  • usage (subject and verb agreement)
  • sentence structure (elimination of fragments)
  • spelling
