                           Social Studies Curriculum Overview                                     

We are very excited to be working with a new Social Studies program this year: Harcourt Social Studies: States and Regions.  Students will begin the year with a geography/map skills review and progress to Unit 1. Below is a list of the units that will be covered and a brief overview of some concepts that will be covered.

    

Unit 1 : The United States (Geography)         

In this unit students will study the surface of the United States and the ways people use it. They will also learn about the history, government, economy, regions and people of the United States.

                                                                                     

Unit 2: The Northeast (Cities and Growth)     

In this unit students will focus on the growth of the Northeast’s population, of its cities and of its economy. Students will have an awareness that many early settlements in the Northeast grew into some of the largest cities in the Unites States today.

 

  

Unit 3: The Southeast (Growth and Change)

In this unit students will study the geography, history, economy and culture of the Southeast in addition to changes in the region’s population.

                                                                                               

Unit 4: The Midwest (Transportation, Land and Cities)

In this unit students will focus on the Midwest and on how transportation led to the settlement of its land and the growth of its cities.

 

 

Unit 5: The Southwest (People and Resources)            

In this unit, students will study many resources in the Southwest. They will also learn about other aspects of the region’s geography and economy as well as its history and cultures.

 

Unit 6: The West (Diversity)                                               

In this unit students will focus on the West and on the diversity of its geography, economy, and people
