General Information for all Classes General Information for all Classes

Here's some general information for students in all of my classes. (For information about a specific course, click on the appropriate subpage at the right.)

Students are asked to have the following supplies for each class:

·        A single-subject notebook, just for math.

·        At least one pen that works for taking notes.

·        One or more sharpened pencils and a working eraser for solving problems.

·        His/her own textbook (which will be supplied by me on the first day of class.)

 Taking Notes

Notes will be given as needed and will usually be accompanied by a hand-out.

There is NO notebook grade, but notes are an important learning tool.

Take them. Keep them. Use them.

All assignments will be written on the board and are to be copied into each student’s agenda each day.

Most assignments will be started in class. Any part of an assignment not finished in class is to be completed 10th period or at home after school.

Some assignments will take more time than we will have in class and are to be completed 10th period or at home after school.

All assignments are worth points – 10 points for 10 problems, 3 points for 3 problems, 25 points for 25 problems, etc. The assignment grade for the quarter is two or three times more than a single test grade.

There is usually one quiz a week, with quiz questions taken from class assignments.

There are NO make-up quizzes. (If you are absent from class when a quiz is given, you have one less quiz grade to be averaged.)

There are NO pop quizzes, but expect a reading quiz after a reading assignment.

There are about 10 quizzes each quarter, worth 10 points each, for a total of 100 points.

At the end of the quarter, if you have missed one or more quizzes your quiz grade will be calculated by dividing the number of quiz points you earned by the total number of points you could have earned on the quizzes you actually took provided you took at least 7 quizzes out of 10.

I do NOT keep the quizzes, but return them to the students to use references to prepare for tests on the material.

Extra Credit

If you do not do the assignments and can not pass quizzes or tests as a result, there is no point in assigning more work you can not do.

Tests

There are at least 3 tests each quarter. They are announced a week or two in advance.

A study guide is provided about a week before each test.

Make-up tests are only given during 10th period. Make and keep an appointment to make-up a test you miss.

I do NOT usually send tests home, but give out progress reports after each test has been graded and returned. If you want to see your child’s test, call or write me a note and I will send home a copy or you can come in by appointment and see the original test.

Class Rules (in addition to school policies)

·        Be on time and prepared. That means in your seat with your assignment ready to be checked when the bell rings.

·        Be responsible.  Do your work. Come for help if you have a question or do not understand something. Review your notes nightly, even when you do not have an assignment to complete outside of class.

·        Be respectful. Respect the rights, feelings, property of others. Do not interrupt when someone else is talking. Raise your hand and wait to be called on. Everyone will get a chance every class. Math class is not a spectator sport; everyone volunteers or gets volunteered by me.

Parents, if you have any questions or concerns at any time, feel free to contact me by e-mail malinowb@riversidesd.com or call me at school 562-2121 and leave a message on my voice-mail. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
