R & R refers to "read and respond" a district mandated element in all students' homework. In my class, students are to read the assignment as many times as it takes to make sense of it. Then, students are to respond to the questions given them in the daily reading assignment. To insure that all students will participate, I send the reading materials for the week home with them on Monday.
A chart of the week's homework is posted on each group's bulletin board on the first day of the week. Students are provided an opportunity to copy down all homework for the week. Homework for the week is also posted on this site. Students are responsible to know what is expected.
I do not send home lists of homework or of missing homework, nor do I keep lists of how much homework a student has or has not completed. This is the way it works. On the day the homework is due, students must turn the homework in as soon as they enter the classroom. Then, we discuss it. Later, I record points for the homework task completed in the grade book. I do not record a grade in the gradebook for homework. I simply record points for the work being done. I may make comments students' work to help them avoid the same mistake next time. I may require students improve their work, but homework is worth points added into the final scores of students; it is not graded. Those students who do not have their homework with them when they enter the room in the morning and those students who need to redo unacceptable work will have one opportunity to make that homework up. That will be provided to them when I can schedule it. From that point, there is no making up of homework accepted. Those students who were absent are expected to turn all work in upon their return. Students who are ill and must stay home for more than one day, will be provided time to do their homework at school, or late homework may be accepted if an agreement is made with me.
