SQW3R Reading Method SQW3R Reading Method

SQW3R--for when close reading is a must!

SQW3R prepares you to understand and remember what you read. It is a 6-step process covering these 3 stages: pre-reading, reading, and review.

Step 1.     S = Survey

Surveying gives you an overview of what you're going to read.

               1. First, read the title. This is a chance to find out what the reading will be about.

               2. Then read the introduction and all of the headings. These will help you understand the text's basic organization.

                3. Look at any illustrations, charts, or photos. These often provide important supplemental facts.

                4. Read the conclusion for a summary of the article's main points.

Step 2.     Q = Question

Questions prepare you for active reading.

                 1. Based on the title, write a question using who, what, when, why, or how, which you'll answer in step 3.

                 2. Based on the headings, write questions using who, what, when, why, or how (also answer in step 3).

Step 3.     W = Write

Write out these questions for consideration.

                  1. Use the Cornell note-taking method. Create a Q column for questions and a note area for your answers.

Step 4.     R = Read

Now you're ready to read with focus and purpose.

                  1. As you read, look for answers to your questions. rite out these questions for consideration.

Step 5.     R = Recite

Reciting helps you remember what you read.

                  1. One by one, reread your questions.

                  2. Reread the answer to each question, either aloud or to yourself.

Step 6.      R = Review

Reviewing helps keep things fresh in your mind.

                   1. Review the reading. Look for answers to any lingering questions you may have.

                   2. Reread your questions and answers.
