This "Introduction to Computers" one semester course includes the most recent developments in the computer industry, computer applications, the Internet, and the components of a computer system. Laboratory exercises stress Microsoft Office 2007 application programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database. This course requires use of computer facilities to complete computer projects. In Computing Essentials 1 you will experience what it is like to take an online college course. Classes are in a face-to-face environment where facilitated learning occurs but you also utilize an online course management program called Moodle to participate in forum discussions, track assignments and deadlines, access resources, and upload assignments. This course may be taken for high school credit or three (3) college credits. Computer skills are NOT a bonus anymore; they are an EXPECTATION in the workforce and college!” This one semester course is designed to develop skills to solve problems using common microcomputer software. Topics include microcomputer fundamentals, word processing, electronic spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software. In order for students to succeed in college and compete in the business world, they must be computer literate. This course is recommended for all students. In Computing Essentials 2 you will experience what it is like to take an online college course. Classes are in a face-to-face environment where facilitated learning occurs but you also utilize an online course management program called Moodle to participate in forum discussions, track assignments and deadlines, access resources, and upload assignments. This course may be taken for high school credit. However, Computing Essentials 1 is a prerequisite to earn three (3) college credits. This required course for freshmen will teach students how to be successful in high school through efficient organization, active listening, and time management skills. Students will look at study skills to learn how to get better grades. This course will include exposure to career options through exploration. Students will be required to complete a career research project. Postsecondary options will be explored to add focus and direction to student high school experiences. Computer literacy and digital citizenship are an integral part of the course. Students will advance their presentation software skills and acquire new knowledge in 21st century emerging technologies, such as wikis and digital storytelling, as they utilize these tools to engage their learning experiences during the academic year. This course will culminate with each student determining a high school program of study for their career pathway.
