Kindergarten News for the Week of May 21, 2012

Information

Just a reminder - all Kindergarten students may dress down day this Thursday, May 24th, since the class turned in the most box tops for the month of April.

No school on May 25th, a planning day for teachers

No school on May 28th for Memorial Day

Field Day is June 1st – students will report to the classroom at 8:30 and dismissal is around 1:00 pm – no aftercare. I still need volunteers to accompany the students to events individually in the morning.

Kindergarten closing ceremonies will take place at 9:30 am in the church on Wednesday, June 6th - this is the last day for Kindergarten. Dress should be Sunday Best as it was for the Spring Concert.

Reading (Language Arts)

The alphabet was completed last week. This week the students will learn the beginning blends of the letters “r” and “l”. Please help your child think of words that begin with these blends to share in morning circle time. Some examples are: crayon, green, tree, prize, frog, flower, blue, slide, plant. The middle sound of the vowels “a” and “e” will also be reviewed. New sight words to add to flash cards and practice are: "what" and "want". The spelling words for Thursday will reflect the middle sound of the vowels “a” and “e” and the beginning blends of “gl” and “fr”.  Spelling words are: bag, Sam, leg, net, glad, frog. We will begin a unit on fairy tales and stories about princesses and princes for the next 3 weeks. The students will listen to fairy tales and answer questions to promote comprehension skills. Your child will work on a book report about his/her favorite fairy tale. The book reports are due next week on May 31st, but the form will be sent home today (Monday). Some examples of fairy tales or princess/prince stories are: Cinderella, The Elves and The Shoemaker, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Jack and the Beanstalk.

Math

The students will continue to work on subtraction fact families to the number 10. The students will learn to apply problem solving strategies to subtraction problems. Homework will reflect this concept.

Science

The students will review the three states of matter and how we use different things that are a solid, liquid, or a gas. For example: trees for paper and furniture, juice or drinks as a liquid, air as a gas.

Religion

The topic in religion will review what we learned about Mary and that God loves us forever.
