LANGUAGE We have now completed alphabet stories for 3 letters: S, B and C. Next week we will learn the letter N. Help us learn the sounds these letters make by pointing out things that begin with them or asking us to say words that begin with one of these letters. We also have been working on learning the names of all the letters and putting them in alphabetical order using the alphabet worm and puzzles. MATH We are learning to count up to nine and to put the numbers 0-9 in order using our Montessori bead stair. We also use Number Rite pegs and puzzles to help us count and order the numbers. SOCIAL STUDIES We have learned the names of the continents and have globes and a continent puzzle to reinforce this knowledge. Some of us have finished coloring our maps of the continents. The rest of us are not far behind. We are also "push-pinning" continents out of construction paper to glue them to globes. We have two hanging up in the room already! Keep practicing the continent song with us: "Show me the continents, show me the continents, show me if you can. North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Don't forget Australia. Don't forget Antarctica. North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia." SCIENCE We learned about our five senses last week and how we use them to discover things about our world. This week we will learn about living and nonliving things. Coming up: what living things need to survive. FINE MOTOR SKILLS We color, cut, glue and stamp. All of these activities help us develop our fine motor skills. In addition, we put together puzzles, create designs on our magnetic shapes board, build things with "Wedgits," sew sewing boards and string beads. COGNITIVE We have many activities that help us develop our cognitive abilities. We match items in many forms, including matching opposites, baby animals to their mothers, and things that go together. We also create designs with shapes and put things in order. We are stringing beads in predesignated patterns and creating birds on a branch according to given patterns. RELIGION Some of us have finished and brought home our creation booklets. The rest of us will finish this week. We have also begun our Pflaum religion series. Each week we will complete a booklet that has stories and activities for the gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday. Be sure to ask us about these booklets. And we work hard every day on our school-wide theme of loving one another. In Atrium we learned about the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd knows his sheep and calls them by name. He takes care of them. Sister does not explicitly say Jesus is the Good Shepherd, but many of the children made the connection. We continue to do work about the liturgical calendar with activities about the colors of the priest's chasuble. Green is for growing (ordinary time where we learn about Jesus), purple is for preparation (when we prepare for a celebration - Advent or Lent), white is for celebration (Christmas and Easter), and red for the Church's birthday (Pentecost - At this age we do not explain that red is also for martyrs' feast days). ART Our beautiful fall trees are displayed in the classroom. We have also painted gorgeous fall leaves that are hanging in our window. October will find us busy with many Halloween related activities.
