We are learning how to determine importance when reading nonfiction text. We will learn how to skim and scan for important information that pertains to our purpose. Text features are a big part of helping us locate information: table of contents, index, glossary, headings, subheadings, photos, illustrations, labels and captions. Knowing how to use this information will be essential to helping us learn what is most important about honey bees and how to find the answers to our questions.
Next week we will begin a Web Quest that will set our reading and writing purpose for each day. The Web Quest contains tasks the students set out to perform. There are many reading and writing activities that are a part of each task. A Web Quest is a really fun way to integrate science, reading, writing and technology!
Since bees live in communities we will take a closer look at our community and the important jobs within it.
Students may invite family members or friends to come in and share about the job they do in the community. This helps students learn how citizens’ jobs are important in creating a good community. If this interests you, just email me or give me a call to arrange a time.
In math we will be working on collecting data through surveys and creating easy ways to read the results (graphs). We will be looking at many different kinds of graphs such as pictographs, bar and pie graphs. We will also be looking closer at attributes and learning to sort them using a Venn Diagram. Working on addition/subtraction facts will be very important as we begin moving into mastering 2 digit addition. Please keep practicing math facts at home!!!!!!
