Expectations, routines and consequences |
|
The classroom runs quite smoothly. Students are taught routines and expectations at the beginning of the year. When they know the routines, transitions are done effortlessly and learning time is maximized. The students are young children and hey, everyone can forget expectations now and again. So, here are some things to help students remember what's expected of them. Positive Rewards - Marble Jar-When students work above expectations as a "team", they earn marbles. Once the jar is filled, students collectively agree on a privilege.
- Make You Famous-I frequently recognize when students are doing well and make them famous in our class as we share what great things they have done.
- Lunch Bunch-Students who did not pull any discipline cards for the month will get to eat their lunch with the teachers on a designated day.
Negative Consequences - One verbal warning about the behavior.
- Card system-1 warning. If the behavior does not improve, student will be asked to pull a card. The cards are pulled in successtion as follows:
Green=Warning, Yellow=5minutes owed, Red=10minutes owed and phone call home, Blue=15minutes owed/phone call home and Think Time (removal from classroom to fill out the Think Time form), Purple=15minutes owed/Think Time/Call Home/Principal, teacher, parent conference. Students usually make a change in their behavior with a verbal warning or the green warning card reminder. Occassionally students move to the yellow. I have found that students rarely proceed to the remaining cards, yet it is important to let students know that parents and the principal will become involved if the behavior does not change. It is the student's responsibility to keep parents informed of when a card is pulled. I explain to students that if warnings are given too frequently, parents will be notified to make sure the student is keeping the parents informed. As mentioned above, if I suspect parents aren't aware of excessive disciplinary actions, they'll be contacted to discuss the child's behavior.
