The of Happenings Room 42:

Mrs. Flynn’s Classroom News for the Week of

February 6th- 10th:

* It is "B" week.

* Our star student is Brice! Congratulations!

*I will be sending home progress notes next week.

*100th Day of School activity- Please have your child bring in his or her collection by Thursday the 9th. Our 100th day of school will be on Friday the 10th. We will be doing many activities on this day to celebrate!

*Our Valentine’s Day party will be on Tuesday the 14th at 1:00. Your child can bring his or her Valentine cards in at any time. Please put them in a bag with his or her name on it.

*Our winter recess is from February 20th-24th.

*A child in our class is missing his snow pants. Could you check at home. They are black and the “Faded Glory” brand. They also have his initials “EM”. If you have them, please send them into school. We have a pair of black “Faded Glory” snow pants in our room, so they were probably just switched by mistake. It would be helpful if your child’s winter gear was labeled with his or her initials. Many of them have the same boots and snow pants. Thanks!

*Please make sure you send your child to school with the proper winter gear (warm jacket, a hat, mittens, snow pants and boots). Currently the children go out everyday after their lunch. If they do not have the proper gear, they have to stay in the cafeteria.

*Spelling Words: bite, white, hide, wide, smile, while/ Challenge Words: after, blue, were, who

* The bubble quizzes have been going great! The children really look forward to them and “advancing” to the next level. You can help your child by reviewing their bubble quiz for the day and either practicing the addition facts that he or she has gotten wrong, or helping him or her prepare for the next level. Remember that the purpose of these “quizzes” is to help your child memorize (know them automatically) the facts.

* Check out my school website at www.egcsd.org/dpsutherland and then click on “teacher pages”. It is another way to find out what is happening in our classroom! I will update it at the beginning of each week.

Learning News:

Reading-  We will be starting our 4th unit in reading. This week we will be focusing on reading and writing words with the long “i” sound and “Mr. Magic e”. We will be making words using the following long “i” word chunks: ide, ite, ile, ike, ime, & ine. You can help your child by having them add a letter or letters to the beginning of each word chunk to make new words. The goal is for your child to read these words fluently.  The comprehension concept we will be working on is cause and effect. We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math-  We will be continuing working on place value. We will practice writing numbers in different ways (ex. 67= 6 tens and 7 ones =60+7). This particular skill tends to be “tricky”, so any extra practice that you can do with your child at home, would be great! We will have a test on Wednesday. We will start a new chapter on Thursday. It is ordering and comparing numbers. We will begin by putting numbers in order.

Writing- During writer’s workshop the children are continuing to think of what they want to write about and then put it down on paper. They are continuing to work on adding details to their writing. The children are working on re-reading what they have written to check for capitals at the beginning of their sentences and correct punctuation at the end. They are also re-reading to make sure what they have written makes sense. The children continue to write about their own personal experiences and respond to non-fiction text.

Science- February is National Dental Health Month. We will be learning about our teeth and how to take care of them. Dr. Alexander, a dentist, will be visiting us on Tuesday to tell us about his job and what we can do to help keep our teeth healthy!
