Learning News:
Reading- We have now covered all of the short vowel word families and this week we will begin reading and writing words with blends at the beginning or ending of a word. The blends we will be focusing on this week are: beginning of a word- sl, sm, sn, fl, & fr/ ending of a word- ll & ss. Your child should be able to read and write words with these blends. You can help your child by having them add the beginning blends to any of the word chunks we have learned. For example: sn+ack=snack. The goal is for your child to read these words fluently (smoothly and automatically). We will be reading the story What Bug Is It? in reading groups. The comprehension concepts we will focus on this week are story elements (identifying the character/characters, setting, problem, and solution), identifying the main idea, identifying the supporting details and using context clues. We will have a spelling and reading test on Friday.
Math- We will have an addition chapter test on Tuesday. Your child should be able to use the following strategies to add and solve word problems: counting on, using the number line, and using double facts. On Wednesday we will begin a chapter on subtraction. We will practice counting backwards and using the number line to solve subtraction problems.
Writing- During writer’s workshop the children are continuing to think of what they want to write about and then put it down on paper. They are drawing a picture and then writing about their picture. They are working on adding a detail/details to their writing. They are working on beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending each sentence with an appropriate punctuation mark. We came up with a list of things that “good writers do”. The children are working on applying these in their writing. The children have been writing about their own personal experiences and have been responding to non-fiction text.
Science- We will compare and contrast different kinds of bugs (This topic goes along with our story in reading groups).
Social Studies- We will continue to learn about the first Thanksgiving. We will also begin to prepare for our feast.
