* Check out my school website at www.egcsd.org/dpsutherland and then click on “teacher pages”. It is another way to find out what is happening in our classroom! I will update it at the beginning of each week. I posted upcoming important dates for the month of November on the first page of the website.
* The first grade classes will be presenting the character word “cooperation” at the November assembly. We will begin practicing in the next couple of weeks. It will be on Friday, November 13th. The children are looking forward to performing!
* I will begin testing the children on the first sight word list that I sent home at the beginning of September. The goal is for the children to be able to read them fluently (smoothly). I will let you know how your child did.
Learning News:
Reading- This week we will be reading and writing words with the short “o” sound. Your child should be able to read and write words with the following short “o” word chunks (word families): ob, ox, ot, og, op, on, od, & ock. You can help your child by adding a letter or letters to each word chunk (ex. b+at=bat). The goal is for your child to read these words fluently (smoothly and automatically). The comprehension concept we will focus on this week is story elements (identifying the character/characters, setting, problem, and solution). We will have a spelling and reading test on Friday.
Math- We will solve word problems using a graph. We will have a chapter test on Tuesday. Your child should be able to write tally marks and complete a pictograph and a bar graph. We will have a unit test on Friday. It will be on the following concepts: number concepts, beginning addition and subtraction, and graphs.
Writing- During writer’s workshop the children are continuing to think of what they want to write about and then put it down on paper. They are drawing a picture and then writing about their picture. They are working on adding a detail/details to their writing. They are working on beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending each sentence with an appropriate punctuation mark. We came up with a list of things that “good writers do”. The children are working on applying these in their writing. The children have been writing about their own personal experiences and have been responding to non-fiction text.
Science- We will continue our study of bats.
Social Studies- We will begin to learn about the first Thanksgiving. We will discuss how the pilgrims and Indians used the character trait “cooperation” to prepare for their feast.
