Your child has been given a list of 100 sight words to practice reading at home. Sight words are the most commonly used words in the English language. By helping your child study these words, you will be helping him/her to become a more fluent, confident reader and will increase their reading and comprehension skills. Sight words are also valuable because they aid your child in figuring out unknown words by recognizing part of words and by comparing phonics and structure to words with which they are already familiar.
I suggest that your child start by reading 25 words at a time and then gradually add a few more words when he/she feels ready. One way to practice is to make flash cards on index cards. For your convenience I have already made flashcards and they are available on this website. Just click on the link below and you can print flashcards for each list your child is studying. In order for the practice to be most productive, it is important for the time spend practicing to be fun and kept to short periods of time when your child isn’t tired.
There are a total of 10 sight words lists (1,000 words in all). Each list increases with greater difficulty. After your child can read EACH LIST WITH 100% ACCURACY, please SIGN THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST and I will know your child is ready to be tested. Words must be read quickly to pass the list. Once your child passes a list, the next list will be given to your child.
