Yippee!!! Our school has subscribed to an exciting online reading program called Raz Kids (www.raz-kids.com). Raz-Kids helps students improve their reading skills as they listen to a book read for modeled fluency. Or, students can read the book to themselves aloud for independent practice. Interactive quizzes are available at the end of each book to check for understanding. If the computer being used has a built-in record function, the students can even record themselves reading the book. Each time students read a book or take a quiz, they earn stars. They can redeem stars to upgrade their personal “Raz Rockets”!
Here is how to access the website and your child’s reading assignment from any computer connected to the internet:
1. Go to www.raz-kids.com and click “Log In”.
2. Type in the teacher’s username: avaras and click “Go”.
3. Find your child’s name and symbol on the chart and click on it.
4. Enter your password when prompted. (It is attached to this paper and it is the same password as the one given for First in Math.)
5. Your child can choose to listen, read, or take a quiz by clicking on the symbols below each book.
I have already set the reading levels in the computer to a starting level at which I know each child will be successful. I will check on the students’ progress each week and update the levels as needed. Also, since the time spent on Raz-Kids is reading, I will allow students to put this on their weekly Reading Logs for their 20-25 minutes of independent reading. Students may only list Raz-Kids up 2 times on their Reading Logs because I still want to encourage them to read the hard copy of books too.
I heartily encourage you to take a tour of the website and all it has to offer. Have fun!!!!
