Parents' Common Questions: HOW DO I CONTACT MRS. AMY? You may email me at thorntona1@k12tn.net. You may call the school and leave a message for me and I will return your call at my earliest convenience. You may call me at home at 692-4942. My children keep me very busy and I am on the go many afternoons and nights. The best way to communicate is by simply sending a note in your child’s folder. If you chose to come in to talk with me, please wait until the buses leave. WHAT DO I DO IF MY CHILD IS ABSENT OR LATE? If your child is absent, please call the school and inform the office. On the day your child returns, please send me a note documenting their absence and I will forward it to the office. I need the note first in order to record it in my attendance book. If they have been to the doctor please get a note from the doctor. If your child is late please sign them into the office in the junior high building and they will call me to let your child in our building. Please remember that 3 tardies count as one absence. I expect all students to be in their seats ready for announcements and ready for class by 7:59 a.m. Please make all efforts to have your child at school on time every day with all their needed supplies. If your child needs to leave early for any reason, please go to the office in the junior high building and check them out in the office. The office workers will call me to let me know you are here, and I will send your child to the front door. WHAT DO I DO WITH LUNCH MONEY? Please pay lunches by the week on Monday. Make sure that ALL money is in an envelope with your child’s name and what the money is for. If you have more than one child in Dyer School, you may send the lunch money with any of your children together in one envelope. If your child brings their lunch to school please make sure it is a healthy well-balanced meal. Lunch menus are posted on the Dyer School website at www.gcssd.org/des. If you prefer a copy for home, please send me a note and I will send you a menu. You are always welcome to come eat lunch with your child. We eat at 10:45 and come back to the room for class at 11:15. If you would like to come eat, please check in at the office just before 10:45 and make you way over to the cafeteria. WHAT ABOUT ICE CREAM? Your child may purchase ice cream each day for $0.50. PLEASE pay for each week’s ice cream on Monday in an envelope with your child’s name and indicate that it is for ice cream. If you prefer for your child to have a different snack besides ice cream, you may send a healthy snack. WHAT DO I DO WITH MY CHILD’S FOLDER? Each day your child will bring home their folder. Please check the folder daily. Inside the folder there will be a pocket for checked work they need to leave at home. Please take the time to review this work with your child. The other pocket is for work they need to finish at home and bring back to school the following day. Also inside your child’s folder, you will find a behavior calendar. We have three behavior colors in our class. Every child starts each day on green. When they end the day on green, it means they have had a GREAT day. They have listened, followed directions, as well as, followed class rules and school rules. Please brag on your child if they have stayed on green all day. If they are on yellow, they had some trouble making good choices. Please discuss with your child how they can have a better day the following day. No one is perfect, and a yellow day is occasionally okay. The final color is red. If your child is on red, they had a difficult time making good choices all day. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated and your child MUST change their behavior immediately. If your child gets on red, they will see me at their playtime. Please sign each day on the calendar so I will know you reviewed their folder. WILL MY CHILD HAVE HOMEWORK IN FIRST GRADE? Your child will have a list of words each week that they must be able to read. Please review these words with your child each night. Help your child sound them out to avoid problems. Your child will bring home one or two take-home readers each week. Please work with your child until they can read the reader all by themselves. Be sure to brag on their successes!! You child will also have math papers to do at home throughout the week. Please review these papers with your child to make sure they understand what they are doing. PLEASE READ WITH YOUR CHILD EVERY DAY! WHAT DO I DO WITH THE BOOK ORDERS? I will be sending home book orders with your child throughout the year. These are excellent ways for your child to get their own books. These are totally optional. If you decide to order a book for your child, fill out the order form, put the exact amount of money in an envelope with your child’s name and what the money is for on the outside of the envelope. If you need to write a check PLEASE make all book order checks payable to SCHOLASTIC BOOKS. WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO TAKE MEDICINE AT SCHOOL? If your child needs to take ANY medicine while at school, please get the proper form from our school nurse, Mrs. Kelly Flowers. She administers all medicine while your child is at school. She arrives at school every day by 7:50 and stays until 3:10. WHAT IS MY CHILD’S SCHEDULE? I am still working on our class schedule. When I get all the kinks worked out you can view it on our class website. If you would like a copy, please send me a note and I will be sure to send one home to you.
