I am excited to bring several new programs to Riverside this year. Our fourth grade students will be participating in the "Junior Achievement" program, or "JA" for short. JA Worldwide is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Junior Achievement programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities. The program consists of 20 classroom guidance units and concludes with an all day hands on learning experience in which our students actually run the Junior Achievement Biztown. Please take the time to explore this exciting program at http://www.ja.org/default.shtml.
Additionally, we have been working through the "Too Good For Drugs" program with both 2nd and 4th grade. Our 4th graders just finished the program and 2nd grade will continue through the rest of the school year. This program teaches our children about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. They learn resistance skills and strategies so that they will always know that they are "Too Good For Drugs." You can learn more about the "Too Good For Drugs" programs by going to their web site www.mendezfoundation.org.
