Helping Your Child Learn Helping Your Child Learn

Dear KS Parents,

Being able to remember things we see and hear is linked to success in school.  Here are some fun-to-do activities that develop these important skills.

*Help your child learn his or her full address, area code, phone number and birth date.

*Line up five objects on a table.  Ask your child to look at the "parade" of objects and to remember the order in which they are arranged.  Have your child look away while you change the sequence of the "parade."  Have your child put the objects back in order.  To make this more difficult, use more objects.

*Play the directions game.  Have your child listen as you give two directions.  After hearing both directions, have your child follow the directions in sequence.  For example: Say your first nameHop two times.  To make this more difficult, give your child three directions to hear, remember and act out.

*After watching a television show, ask your child to tell you what happened at the beginning, middle and end.  Ask the same questions after reading a story.

*Encourage your child to memorize some easy poems and nursery rhymes.

*Sing songs with your child.  Borrow CDs from the library.  Play them as you travel by car with your child.

The following are some activities that relate directly to the KS curriculum.

*Play card games with your child.  Talk about the numbers and letters on the cards and what they mean.  Ask your child to show and tell you the suits.

*Set up a pretend store at home.  Price the items using low amounts.  Help your child learn the name and value of penny, nickel, dime, quarter.  Ask your child to pay for the items telling you the name of the coin and it's value.

*Provide your child with some simple dot-to-dot pictures using either numbers or letters.  You can find dot-to-dot pictures on the web at abcteach.com and many other sites.

*When your child practices printing his or her first and last name, always begin the name with an upper case letter, using lower case letter for the rest.

*Help your child learn how to properly use the mouse on the computer. Some websites that we will visit with the KS Kids are Starfall.com, Brainpop.com (username: saintlouis password: brainpop), pbskids.org, jigzone.com.

Enjoy these learning activities with your child!
