Science Fiction and Fantasy! Here is the official Science Fiction page! Science Fiction/Fantasy movies tend to deal with things that are not real, or may appear in legends like aliens, vampires, space travel, etc. All of these movies may also have elements of romance or action adventure as well. Check out the movies below and see if you are interested in seeing any of them. Some might be in theaters (T), on DVD (D), and some might also be found as a novel (N); in any case, check them all out below. Movies are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars (*), 5 being awesome! :O) The Day the Earth Stood Still--(***) A thought-provoking movie starring Keanu Reeves. An alien species decides to come to Earth to protect our planet from US...the human race. Destroying out planet through all of our technology, we really are making a mess. This movie tries to show us the importance of understanding other cultures, and making choices to do what is right. Sometimes, when we learn something new, we need to change our opinions and our impressions of others to do things right. An interesting action movie. You'll be thinking about it for a while. (D,N) Ella Enchanted-- (*****) What a great movie! This is a mixed-up Cinderella story that is no doubt better than the original. You'll have to check it out! Ella of Frell had a spell put on her when she was very young from the fairy Lucinda: the gift of obedience! She must do everything she is told to do, even if it endangers her life or someone else! She deals with the curse until she decides that she must do something about it, and this makes her life troublesome indeed! Magic, talking books, ogres, giants, elves, and even a handsome prince are in Ella's future. This movie has an amazing moral about going against the pressure, AND it has great music, too. Check it out. (N, D) Harry Potter-- (*****) An excellent bunch of great movies. There are six Harry Potter movies out right now, with the next two of the seventh book due out next year. The Harry Potter series is about a boy named Harry who escaped the Dark Lord Voldemort when he was only a year old. When he turns eleven, he discovers that he is a wizard and is permitted to attend Hogwarts, a school for witches and wizards. There, he triumphs over Lord Voldemort nearly once a year, and if it isn't him, it is someone working for him. Ron and Hermione, his friends, are always by his side, and as the movies progress, year after year, Harry gets older and wiser, making decisions that will affect the rest of his life...and the lives of the rest of the world may soon depend on his choices as well. Awesome movies made from an unbelievable book series. A bunch of must-sees! LOL (D) The Incredible Hulk--(*****) This movie is really good. I absolutely hated the first Hulk movie that was made--it was terrible! However, this movie exceeded my expectations and was really great! Bruce Banner was injured by radiation in an explosion, and now transforms, when infuriated, into an incredibly, indestructible green monster. The army is trying to hunt him down, but Betty, the love of his life, is trying to save him and find a way to help him. However, the hunt is on when another scientist creates a creature that seems to be even MORE indestructible than our hero. Will Bruce be able to overcome the terrible being and find a way to work alongside those who have been trying to kill him...for the sake of the human race? Great movie! (D,N) Independence Day--(*****) One of my favorite movies, Independence Day deals with an alien race coming to take over the earth and use up all of our natural resources, effectively leaving our planet a barren wasteland. Across the world, countries must unite in order to wipe out the alien menace once and for all in a final assault. Starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldbloom, Bill Pullman, and many other great actors, this movie is awesome all the way around! It really is a must-see! (D) Knowing--(***) Not an excellent movie, but certainly not a bad one, Nicholas Cage stars as a Father who discovers that all the world's most tragic events are leading up to one thing: the world's destruction! He also discovers that even though he tries, he cannot prevent it. His children are taken by Angel-like beings to live out their lives in a heaven-type place. Personally, I thought they could have done a lot more with this movie. However, I tried to enjoy it for what it was...fantasy. (D) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy-- (*****) There is no doubt that my favorite movies of all time are the three movies that make up The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The story tells the tale of Frodo Baggins, a hobbit who must take a dangerous ring into the heart of the worst place in Middle Earth to destroy it. On the way, he travels with nine companions, elves, dwarves, hobbits, wizards, and two men. One of the men, Aragorn, will one day be a great King of men, and the movie is also about him accepting who he will someday be. Frodo's struggle in these movies, along with the struggle of the War that Aragorn and his companions are pulled into, tells a beautiful story about sacrifice and the power of one person changing the course of many futures. Check out the Trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. (N, D) Next-- (****) Starring Nicholas Cage, this is a seeing-into-the-future type movie. Having no idea how, Nicholas Cage's character can see two minutes into the future before he takes an action, so unlike the rest of the world, he can see how the consequences of his actions are going to play out...immediately before they happen. He uses this, of course, in ways that are quite obnoxious. He has a special gift...however, he's never thought about how to use it for good until he happens upon a girl who he knows is in his future, and an FBI agent who wants his help. A truly interesting movie that has some intense twists in it. NOT for younger viewers! (D) RoboCop-- (**) The storyline for this movie is great, however everything else about it is absolutely disgusting. This movie is rated R for good reason! The story is about a cop who is nearly killed on duty, but is then made into a half-man, half-robot called Robocop. Robocop is the ultimate cop, and he takes out the downtown Detroit and shows the baddies who is boss. Remember, this movie is a SERIOUS R rating. I can't wait until they do the remake. I hope it will be much better. (D) Star Wars-- (***, *****) If there are six movies you should watch sometime in your lifetime, they are the six Star Wars films. The first three Star Wars films (*****), A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, focus on the story of a young man named Luke Skywalker who comes to learn he is a Jedi and how he too can aid a rebellion against the vicious Empire. Along the way he makes great friends with a Princess and also a rogue who become his greatest companions. The last three Star Wars movies, (****)The Phantom Menace, (***)Attack of the Clones, and (*****)Revenge of the Sith, deal with the story of Luke's father Anakin, and his decent into his role as Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith. Filled with action, lightsaber and space battles, and even a touch of romance, this "good vs. the dark in all of us" story will have you on the edge of your seat and rooting for the good guy again and again! (D, N) Superman Returns--(***) Superman literally returns to Earth in this really exciting Superman tale. Lex Luthor has escaped from prison and has returned to unleash his anger at Superman on the world. He has every expectation that this time, Clark will not be able to beat him; especially since his new fortress is built from the one material that Superman cannot stand against...kryptonite! But the hero of the day will overcome overwhelming odds and once again prove that he IS the hero that Metropolis...and the world...needs! (D) Terminator Quadrilogy--(****) THe Terminator series takes place in both the future and the present. After a nuclear war where machines take over to rule the world, a man takes control of the human resistance. His name is John Connor. Since he fights against the machines, the machines send a Terminator robot back in time (Schwarzanegger) to kill him before he is even born (Terminator), then when he is a child (Judgement Day), and then when he is an adult (Rise of the Machines). The movies are quite good, although the first is extremely bloody and there is a lot of violence in all of them (rated R). Warning to children altogether! Terminator:Salvation, the final movie, stars Christian Bale as John Connor. I haven't seen that one yet! (D) Transformers--(*****) Transformers is a two-part movie about robots from another planet that come to earth searching for a mysterious object that gives them all their energy...the All-Spark. A boy named Sam is buying his first car and happens to discover that it turns into an amainzing robot called Bumblebee! Sam and his girlfriend Mikaela find themselves working very hard to help the good Autobots destroy the nasty Decepticons who want to take over earth. In the second movie, Revenge of the Fallen, Megatron is resurrected from the dead, Optimus Prime is seriously wounded, and Sam & Mikaela must help the Autobots again to prevent earth's destruction. Both movies are really good, but parent discretion advised as there are multiple crude jokes and comments. (D) Twilight-- (****) This movie is an excellent example of romance and science fiction wrapped into one. Twilight is the story of Bella Swann who goes to a new town and discovers she is in love with one of its most handsome residents, Edward Cullen. Edward's family, however, holds an interesting secret...he secretly desires her blood as he is a vampire! Edward does battle this desire, however, because he is in love with her as well. The story is packed with beauty and romance, but also action. Check it out! (N, D) X-Men -- (****) The X-Men are completely cool; no doubt about it! :O) These three movies show the progression of the X-Men from their beginnings to their near destruction. The first movie really gives us a lot of background on the characters, mainly focusing on Logan (Wolverine) and his background. In the second movie, X2:X-Men United, William Striker, from Logan's past, kidnaps Xavier and tries to force him to find all the mutants and kill them with his mind. In the final movie of the trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand, the mutants must take on Jean Grey, who has risen again as the Pheonix, a powerful alien entity that controls her mind and makes her to terrible things. These movies are very good, though they are violent and sometimes crude, so make sure that your parents watch them first. (N, D) X-Men Origins: Wolverine-- (****) A very interesting movie telling of the origins of Logan, the Wolverine. This is a very graphic movie, even though it is good, so parents be warned! Logan and his brother, Sabretooth, have been mutants since they were quite young. They are also both made nearly immortal by their powers, so they have fought in every war since the Civil War. Tired of wars, Logan tries to settle down and make a life for himself, but Sabretooth has other plans for him...as does William Striker. The plot thickens, and Logan becomes sheathed in adamantium, making him virtually indestructible. Check out this interesting movie...sadly though, we all know how it ends! (D)
