Gifted Education/8:00 Kids

8:00 Kids Several years ago, Mrs. Spivey and Mrs. Hull had a vision for Gifted Education in the primary grades at Patronis Elementary School. Before that time, students had to wait to be in third grade before they could begin receiving services in the Gifted Program. It was their strong belief that children do not magically become "gifted" when they reach the third grade. Traits and characteristics of gifted learners are evident long before that time. At our school, we recognized the need for differentiated practice and instruction for these primary grade students. We began an arduous process of redesigning our Gifted Program to meet the needs of all levels of learners. We currently offer pull-out services for thirty minutes daily for the students who have qualified. We meet from 8:00-8:30, hence we are the "8:00 Kids". This year, Mrs. Hull and I provide instruction for these students in collaboration with our regular gifted classroom students. We have seen amazing progress and teamwork as the first, second, third and fourth graders work together during this time. During the 30 minute time block, we meet in the technology labs every day. We utilize the Media Center and its resources for research and technology purposes. That is a critical component of our program as most of our students’ goals reflect incorporating research and technology as they learn to become 21st century citizens. Additionally, there are two teachers, Mrs. Hull and Ms. Rose, along with a paraprofessional, during this time to work with our classes and K-2 Gifted students. We structure our time, learning activities, and inquiry-based explorations all around the needs of the students we teach during this time. We are loving learning as we collaborate with one another during 8:00 Kids time!
