Curriculum

In Mathematics, the adopted series is Eureka Math.  We are looking forward to learning more about it and utilizing all aspects of it to meet the advanced needs of our students.  We will develop an understanding of and fluency with division of whole numbers, develop an understanding of and fluency with addition and subtraction of fraction and decimals, describe three-dimensional shapes and analyze their properties, including volume and surface area. Our supporting ideas in 4th grade Math will include Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, Numbers and Operations, and Data Analysis.

In Reading, McGraw Hill's Reading Wonders is available as the basal series, offering a huge variety of resources for shared reading, vocabulary and comprehension.  Now that the students are fluent readers the stage of reading development we will be working on will be reading to learn.  Our Book Room has many leveled readers, chapter books and resources accessible to us as well as the Patronis Media Center.  Mrs. Senn will be on staff full time.  We work with her consistently to make sure our students have access to the latest and greatest as we advance our research skills in the areas of media and technology.  Our strands that we will focus on in Reading are Reading Process, Literary Analysis, Communication, and Information and Media Literacy.

In Writing, our class will work very hard to continue to build on the writing skills they learned in fourth grade.  Our focus will be on the Writing Process and Writing Application.  Students will informative/expository pieces or opinion writing.  We will practice in many areas with a variety of rubrics to score our work individually or with partners and groups.  I will use a combination of techniques for instruction in the area of writing.
*Please see the rubrics for the Florida Standards Assessment on Writing here.

In Science, Bay District Schools has adopted yet another Houghton Mifflin Harcourt program, Florida Science Fusion.  Fusion promises to energize students through an exciting blend of print, digital, and inquiry experiences.  Our new series will focus on many Big Ideas of Science.

In Social Studies, we will focus on four main strands.  These strands are American History, Geography, Economics, and Civics and Government.  Most of these areas will be integrated into our daily reading block.

Curriculum, planning and instruction will be derived from a standards-based philosophy.  Additionally, individual needs of the students must be met.  It is my goal and my challenge to take each student as far as I can along this path called learning.

We are so fortunate to have a plethora of resources at our school.  We will use each and every one of them to meet our needs in our classroom.

Please find the Florida Standards by clicking on the link.  We will be using these standards in our class this year.

Also, you may access any of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's resources for Go Math, and Florida Science Fusion with your child's log-in information.
