We have much to look forward to this quarter!
We've begun our exploration of common root words and their meanings in our quest (ques, meaning to search) to expand our vocabularies and build our skills as readers of complex text. The highlight of this quarter will probably be our author study of Edgar Allan Poe. We will be reading several of his short stories and poems, as well as his biography. We'll write a parody after his great poem, "The Raven", and we'll have a chance to see some of his original manuscripts, his writing desk, and lots of other interesting artifacts from the life of one of America's most celebrated authors during our trip to UT's Harry Ransom Center.
This quarter we'll also launch our first literature circle, as we revisit our dialectical journals and continue to build our skills as independent readers. Students will choose from eighty classroom titles, and read a book with three or so other students who have chosen the same novel.
Then we'll develop an imaginary story writing unit inspired by the short stories of notable speculative fiction authors, and developed from some of the free writing we'll be doing this quarter. We'll finish out the quarter with an inquiry unit that will be integrated with what students are learning in world cultures and technology studies.
And of course, we still write independently in the accordion journals we've made. Be sure to check out our writer's gallery, where we're posting some of our favorite journal entries, as well as other exceptional writing.
