Sixth Grade Language Arts

It's third quarter already!

We have much to look forward to.  We'll continue our study of root words, look at connotation, learn how to annotate text, and explore a movie adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Together, we will read The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan.  We'll explore symbolism, plot and character development, allusion, and connotation.  We will conclude the unit by writing an essay comparing and contrasting the book and movie versions after viewing the film adaptation as part of our unit of study.  And we'll research, design and create a costume that represents a Greek god or monster that we've learned about through our study of the novel.

We'll also be learning the inquiry process as we complete our first big inquiry writing assignment.  Our topics will relate to the theme of Solutions to Contemporary Social Problems.  The research and the multimedia presentations we create in order to present our findings will be a collaborative project between Language Arts, World Cultures, and Technology.  We are going to be great!
