We will develop critical standards for the independent appreciation of any literary work. Writing is extensive. Summer reading of major novels is required with assessment occurring in September for all AP students. Goals of the AP Course The aim of this course is to enable the student to read and understand complex text and to write effectively and confidently across the curriculum using prose writing to communicate with a wide ranging and mature audience. Ultimately, it is my hope that the student is not only prepared to take the AP exam in May, but do well on it, earning college credit. Summer Reading A Farewell to Arms- Ernest Hemingway The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald Invisible Man- Ralph Ellison Of Mice and Men- John Steinbeck 11th grade Academic English Course Description This course is an integrated study of American Literature designed for the college bound student. We will read, analyze and discuss major American authors with attention given to historical, religious and political influences. The course includes short stories, poems and novels that are representative of literary movements in America. Two novels will be discussed in depth. Vocabulary study will include SAT recommended words. The writing traits will used to score written work.
