Hello and Welcome to the Title I K-2 website! Remember, if you have any questions or would like any suggestions on how you can help your child at home, please feel free to e-mail me at jessica.francis@atlantiscs.org I would love to hear from you!!! Here's a little bit about what's going on in Title 1, and what I'm working on with your children... 1st grade At this point in the year, I'm working to ensure that my students have mastered all the letter sounds, and can identify beginning and ending sounds in words. We are practicing reading, spelling, and manipulating words with the short a sound, focusing on changing the beginning and ending sounds to form new words. We are also learning about rhymes and what makes words rhyme. For example, the -at, or -ap family. All words with "-at" at the end will rhyme because they have the same spelling pattern. (ex. cat, mat, pat). We're using letter tiles to manipulate the words, to show students the relationship between letter sounds and words. As a routine in Title 1, we will be practicing sight words daily, and working on using correct letter formation when writing. 2nd grade At the beginning of second grade, we're really working on decoding skills in order to help your children bring their reading level up to grade level. We're working on remembering the difference between long and short vowels, and when each one should be used. We're focusing on reading with fluency, and learning pre-, during, and after-reading strategies to help remember what was read. At this point in the year, we're trying to determine exactly how much each child can do independently, so most of the second graders are receiving in class support. If needed, students are pulled out to receive more direct instruction and support in a separate setting. As many of the students remember from last year, we will also be practicing sight words daily.
