About the Performing Arts Department

“What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing.” - Aristotle

This historic quote hits the mark exactly when describing the Performing Arts program at Atlantis Charter School. The philosophy, instruction, and activities for the music curriculum are rooted in Orff Schulwerk; and, as such, are very “hands-on”.  Some examples of "hands-on" activities include rhymes, poems, and chants; songs; movement and dances; and playing instruments, such as mallet instruments (a.k.a. xylophones and glockenspiels) and recorders.

From an educational perspective, Orff Schulwerk is, by nature, rich in Differentiated Instruction, as well as being embedded with Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences.  Students at Atlantis Charter School learn, and experience music visually, kinesthetically, orally, aurally, and logically.  Students also internalize their learning through inter and intra-personal means.  These types of meaningful experiences allow students to appreciate the Arts.  To learn more about differentiated instruction or multiple intelligences, click onto these two links: http://www.differentiatedresources.com    http://www.thomasarmstrong.com/multiple_intelligences.htm

All students have much to do and learn during the year, which is reflected through the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks standards for music - singing, reading music, playing instruments, arranging and improvising music, and thinking critically about music (as well as considering how music connects to others subjects and their own lives).  Through these six curriculum standards, students learn about the musical elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and texture.

In addition to their weekly classroom music sessions, students in grades 4 - 8 have the option of joining an extra-curricular activity.  The offerings for this year include chorus and various instrumental lessons.  For more detailed information on our extra-curricular activites, visit the downloads area.  Students at the Upper School also have an opportunity to be part of the spring musical.  Students are needed in many ways; for both on stage (acting/singing/dancing) and off-stage (technical crew) roles.  Announcements for this activity, including auditions, sign-up sheets, and a meeting, will be made late in the Fall.
