What are we learning about this month in Math Lab?  This month, students will be beginning to develop efficient addition and subtraction strategies using 2- and 3-digit numbers. Through various problem solving tasks, investigations, and activities, students will explore these areas both independently and cooperatively. In particular, this unit will help students develop a mental model for adding and subtracting 2-and 3-digit numbers. The open number line model will continue to be explored which will require students to be able to build and break apart numbers. Students will use place value concepts to assist in these tasks. *Just a Reminder: Please remember to bring your math folder, homework, and pencil to math lab everyday! We will need these tools everyday to be successful math learners! At the beginning of the school year, each student will be supplied with a math folder. As the year progresses and you find that your child's folder is in need of replacing, please feel free to send him or her in with a new folder for math class. Gold Coins Each math student has had an opportunity to earn gold coins each day by following classroom rules, working hard, and being prepared for class. Once the student has accumulated 5 coins, he or she gets to select a special "surprise" from our treasure chest. Stoplight Behavior Management System During the first week of school, the second graders worked together to compile a list of rules that they believed would help us to have a safe, supportive, and productive learning environment. With these rules in mind, I have implemented a behavior management system which I believe will help us to maximize our learning and minimize inappropriate behaviors. A stoplight is displayed at the front of our room with the colors: green, yellow, and red. Clothespins, with each child’s name, surround the stoplight. Everyone begins each day with their clip on "green.” If a class rule is broken, the student will first receive a verbal warning encouraging them to make a better choice. If the student continues to violate classroom rules, the student’s clip is moved to the “yellow.” This will result in a loss of recess time where the child and I will meet to discuss the inappropriate behavior and ways to prevent it from happening in future classes. If another behavior problem occurs that day, the student’s clip will be moved to “red.” The color “red” is reserved for very severe discipline problems. Such behavior results in a note home, a trip to the office, loss of entire recess, and/or detention based on the severity of the problem. At the end of each math lab, everyone goes back to green. This system may seem confusing, but it’s actually quite simple. Best of all, it allows me to devote more time to teaching and less time to handling discipline problems. Go For Green!
