What Parents Can Do To Help Their Children: Summer Math Review
- Talk to your children about the importance of mathematics to future success. Mention the way mathematics is used in all careers.
-
- Math is everywhere, even in music, art, and sporting events. Parents are the first and most important teachers to help open a child’s eyes to the beauty of mathematics.
-
- Let your children help compute the cost of items while shopping. They can practice identifying coins and their values, compute the amount of change you receive, etc.
-
- Younger children can count the items in the grocery cart to see which aisle you should wait in. Older children can compute the sales tax and help add the bills when they arrive each month.
-
- Promote measurement activities, such as cooking together. Reading the indoor and outdoor thermometer and tracking the changes is another worthwhile activity.
-
- Look for ways to practice telling time, practicing elapsed time, and scheduling events. For example, if you are going on a trip and it will take 4 hours to get there, what time should you leave if you want to arrive by 2:00 pm? If you are going to stop for an hour to eat lunch, will that impact your departure or arrival time? Questions like this can pop up every day if you keep them in mind.
-
- Buy an inexpensive analog watch for your child and help them practice telling time. You might want to make it a waterproof watch!
-
- If you go to the amusement park you can talk about how math is involved in the rides, the price of tickets, and the concession stand.
-
- Encourage your children’s interest in mathematics and let them know they can succeed!
