Classroom Expectations Classroom Expectations

In the first few weeks of school, students will learn what is expected of them and of their work. Together as a class, we will write our class rules and each student will sign the rules showing their understanding and commitment. I expect that students give me 100% effort in their work, their behavior and their relationships with others. Not only do I want my students to become more intelligent and hard working, but I also want them to work on being better human beings as well. We must work as a team, helping one another achieve our goals.

Classroom Store

For classroom management, I use a strategy that not only teaches responsibility but also allows students to take control of their own behavior. Each student will be awarded paper money throughout the school year. Money can be awarded for behavior such as good deeds, keeping their area clean, getting all their work done on time or helping a neighbor. Money can also be taken away for unacceptable behavior or not being prepared for class. At the end of each month, students can then spend their money at the class store.

Classroom Jobs

For our classroom jobs, new helpers are chosen each week. Names are randomly selected and students choose the job they would like to have. If you have a job one week, you will have time off the following week so that everyone has the chance to get a job. The jobs to choose from include:

  • Paper passer
  • Line leader
  • Caboose
  • Messenger
  • Teacher's Helper
  • Hall Monitor

Homework

Students will be given a homework packet at the beginning of the week, along with a reading log. Students must complete the whole homework packet and reading log and return it to me on Friday. Students can complete their packets at their own leisure. This ensures that all students, especially those who take part in sports and extra-curricular activities, have time to finish their homework. I would appreciate a note of explanation from a parent if it is not completed. Completing homework every night is part of the student’s responsibility and also part of their “job” as a third grade student. Along with written homework, students are required to read for at least thirty minutes a night and then log in on their weekly reading log. A parent or guardian is also required to sign the log each night to ensure their child is reading. Practice makes perfect, so please read each night. You can read to yourself, with someone else, or read to your stuffed animal.

Homework is checked and graded every week. If it is not turned in, it becomes a zero. Five missing homework assignments will result in a detention, where the student will take time in completing their responsibilities.

Healthy Snack

Students will have time for a snack each day. Please send your child to school with items that will help him/her to concentrate on the work ahead of them. Again this year Atlantis Charter School is taking part in a nationwide Healthy Snack Initiative. This means that we are encouraging students to bring in only healthy snacks, limiting the intake of foods high in sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. Some suggestions for healthy snacks include fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, popcorn, water, 100% juice, etc.

Dress Code

Please be sure to review the new uniform policy that was implemented this year. Students are expected to be in dress code each day. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the school.

Agenda

Please remember to take the time to review your child's agenda each night to ensure they are completing their homework and/or projects. I ask that you sign the agenda each night to show that you have reviewed the information there. I thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Low grades

Please note: If students are bringing home papers lower than 70 and are stamped "Please sign and return", those papers need to be returned to school. This policy is meant to keep you informed of how your child is performing so that there are no surprises when it is time for midtrimester reports and report cards.

Also-please remind your child that he/she MUST have his/her name on all papers that are being handed in. Students do not receive credit if there is no name. In addition, students do not receive credit if homework is not handed in in the morning!
