Eighth Grade English with Mrs. Burns

Welcome to English!  I’m anxious to have your child join me for an exciting and fun year.  The following information will help your child be successful in my class.

English Supplies:

2 One-Subject Notebooks

Pencils

Red Pens

Loose Leaf Paper

Washable Markers—Optional

Thesaurus--Optional

Grading System:

Homework assignments will count as 60 percent of your child’s grade.

Quizzes will count as two daily grades.

Tests will be 40 percent of your child’s grade.

Most writing assignments, (essays), will count as 2 to 3 daily grades.

Assignments and Late Work:

All homework that is assigned is expected to be complete and ready to turn in the next day unless the essay/project has been assigned a different due date.  If a student forgets to turn in an assignment, they may use 1 of their 2 late savers that are given to them at the beginning of each nine weeks.  Students will receive a max of 60 percent, and the assignment will be due one day late. Each student will receive two late savers per nine weeks to use on a homework assignment.  These may be used in any of their core subjects; however, I do not accept them on essay assignments. Students must keep up with them, and they will not carry over to the next nine weeks.

If a student is gone due to band, vocal, track, sporting event, etc., they are still expected to get their work turned in.  Just like other absent work, the student will have time to make up the missing assignments.  Example:  If a student is home ill or misses one day due to a track meet, the child will have one day to complete his or her work.  If gone two days, the student will have two days to make up the work.

During the course of the school year, we will work on grammar as well as have numerous writing assignments.  Our CRT state writing test will be in February.  It is extremely important that your child put time and effort into each essay assignment and other writing projects.

Your child will have a spelling test every other Friday.  The words will be given out the Monday before Friday’s test.  Please check the website for the spelling list and any other information.
