Letter from the Presidents

Welcome to the Darien District #61 Band Program. Whether you son or daughter is new to band or a returning member, they will be participating in a rich and full music program. Darien has a long tradition of being recognized as one of the best music programs in the country. From local parades to competing against (and beating) high school programs on a national level, this band program is something special. They are truly a joy to watch perform.

What makes this happen year after year?  I believe it is two distinct factors.

First and foremost, it is our wonderful director Ms. Maria Zurbano! In that cramped for space band room with worn out carpet and decrepit shelving units, Ms. Zurbano waves her magic wand to produce wonderful performances year after year. We are lucky to have her! And let’s not forget Mr. Bonanotte, as he is the first to bring music to the life of many District #61 children and he does it in a fun and non-intimidating way.  Their efforts in the classroom help further the growth and development of our children into well-rounded individuals.

The second factor is the Darien District #61 Band Boosters. The band boosters have played a significant role in the success of the band program over the years. The band boosters provide financial and manpower support to the program. Due to band booster’s support, new uniforms have been purchased after using the previous uniforms for 40 years! This year we intend on completing the ensemble with new hats and spats. The band booster board is comprised of very dedicated volunteers. Their tasks involve organizing all fundraising activities, uniform fittings, chaperoning, stage set ups, band trip planning/coordinating, web site development and many other jobs.

As a parent of a band member, you are a member of the band booster organization. Sustaining the outstanding caliber of the band program requires outstanding support from parents. I encourage all band parents to participate in our activities.  Participation can mean baking goodies for the Spaghetti Dinner, chaperoning at site sales, assisting with any of the band events or simply buying a band T-shirt.  You can determine your level of involvement. Your support at our recent Tag Days event was greatly appreciated! In fact, it was due to the additional parent participation that caused us to raise more money than the previous year. Thank you!

In today’s fast paced, activity overloaded world we live in, it is much more challenging to participate now more than ever. Trust me, I understand. However, we cannot overlook what a music program brings to the lives of our children. Music has been proven to improve a child’s performance in school. (See attached articles) Kids who participate in music are better in math and science. Music programs breed a culture of cooperation and self esteem as they must work together to create beautiful music. While your child may not grow up to be the next great musician, music will make them a more well rounded individual. Your active support is needed and is certainly appreciated!
